The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club is a legendary event, known for its intense pressure and claustrophobic atmosphere on Masters Sunday. Players experience a sense of tightness and tension, both from the fans and the iconic moments on the course. The ghost of Bob Jones looms large, adding to the pressure of the tee shot on 18 and the prospect of an interview in Butler Cabin. Francesco Molinari, during the 2019 Masters, felt the weight of the event as he prepared to compete for the green jacket.

For many players, the claustrophobia sets in long before they even step onto the first tee. The anticipation and anxiety build in the clubhouse, with well-meaning spectators adding to the pressure with their good luck wishes. Players like Tiger Woods have experienced the stress of Sunday at Augusta multiple times, despite their experience and preparation. The setting at Augusta National, with spectators lining the fairways and clubhouse members watching from above, creates a high-stakes environment that can affect even the most seasoned players.

Psychologist Bhrett McCabe advises golfers to start preparing mentally for Sunday at the Masters long before the tournament begins. The elevated experience of competing on the final day of the Masters requires a heightened level of mental fortitude to withstand the pressure. The moments of silence on iconic holes like the 6th and 12th create an intense atmosphere that can impact players’ performance. The privacy of the 12th green and 13th tee offers a brief respite from the scrutiny before players reemerge into the spotlight.

Players often find themselves becoming fans, caught up in the spectacle of the tournament despite competing in it. Even seasoned veterans like Brooks Koepka and Ian Poulter can appreciate the magic of Augusta National on Masters Sunday. The competition is fierce, with only one player emerging victorious each year. The rest of the field quickly exits the course, leaving behind the hysteria and pressure until the next year’s tournament. The Masters is a unique event that tests the mental and emotional resilience of every player who tees it up at Augusta National.
