In the world of destination golf, Pinehurst stands out as a classic American golfing destination, known as the “Home of American Golf.” It has become a popular spot for golf travel, especially after hosting an all-time U.S. Open in June. The region has seen an expansion of partnerships between Pinehurst, the USGA, and the new World Golf Hall of Fame, making it a hub for golf enthusiasts.

While Pinehurst No. 2 is often in the spotlight, there are other hidden gems in the area. GOLF editors James Colgan and Josh Sens visited Pinehurst to explore the great golf courses beyond No. 2, as well as the lesser-known spots that tourists often miss. They were joined by local resident and GOLF architecture editor, Ran Morrissett, who provided insight into the region’s golfing history and unique courses.

Their journey began at Pine Needles, a legendary major championship host in Pinehurst. Built outside the Pinehurst Resort, Pine Needles used to be a part of the Pinehurst golfing empire. The course was opened in late 1928 and has since been under the care of the Bell family, founders of the LPGA Tour. Pine Needles has a rich history and offers a different golfing experience compared to Pinehurst No. 2.

Pine Needles features dramatic topography and unique hole layouts designed by Donald Ross. Ross utilized the natural movement of the land, creating challenging and diverse holes that require strategic play. The course has hosted the US Women’s Open four times, showcasing its reputation as a test for both driving and approach shots. The variety of holes at Pine Needles makes it a standout course in the Pinehurst area.

The editors noted the distinct feel of Pine Needles compared to other courses in the area. While Pinehurst Resort has a bustling and scenic atmosphere, Pine Needles exudes a rustic, laid-back vibe reminiscent of an old summer camp. The golf experience at Pine Needles, with its three distinct courses – Needles, Mid-Pines, and Southern Pines, offers a unique and enjoyable challenge for players looking for diverse layouts.

In addition to the golf courses, Pinehurst and its surrounding area offer a plethora of golf-related businesses, shops, and attractions. Visitors can immerse themselves in the golf culture of the region, exploring memorabilia shops, art galleries, and golf-themed pubs. The editors took advantage of this golf-centric environment by visiting GolfPride headquarters for club regripping, adding to the overall golfing experience in Pinehurst.

Overall, Pine Needles is a hidden gem in the Pinehurst area, offering a unique golfing experience with its historical significance, diverse course layouts, and laid-back atmosphere. For golf enthusiasts looking to explore beyond Pinehurst No. 2, Pine Needles is a must-visit destination that showcases the rich golfing heritage of the region. Whether playing a round of golf or immersing oneself in the golf culture of Pinehurst, a visit to Pine Needles is a memorable and rewarding experience for any golfer.
