Issa Nlareb, a golfer from Cameroon, fulfilled his dream of coming to the United States to play golf by competing in the 2024 U.S. Adaptive Open at Sand Creek Station in Kansas. His journey to America and to the golf course was marked by incredible challenges, including battling bacterial meningitis in 2017 that led to the amputation of both his legs and most of the fingers on his right hand. Despite these obstacles, Nlareb was determined to continue playing golf and inspiring others through his journey.

Growing up in Africa, Nlareb faced homelessness after his mother’s death when he was just 11 years old. He chose to pick golf balls and work for food rather than live on the streets, which led him to a career in golf. Despite the setbacks from his illness, Nlareb continued to pursue his love for the sport by getting into coaching and eventually returning to competitive play. He quickly rose in the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability, showcasing his exceptional talent and determination.

Nlareb’s return to golf inspired many people as he became one of the top disabled players in the world. Despite his physical challenges, he continued to excel in the game and became an ambassador for the disabled golf community. His story of perseverance and resilience touched the hearts of many, as he shared his journey through motivational speaking engagements at churches and schools. Nlareb’s positive attitude and passion for golf served as a source of inspiration for those facing their own challenges.

Receiving an invitation to compete in the U.S. Adaptive Open was a significant moment for Nlareb, as it represented the realization of a life-long dream to play golf in America. Despite facing financial obstacles and sponsorship challenges, Nlareb finally made it to the United States to compete at Sand Creek Station. His performance in the tournament reflected his determination and skill, with a strong opening round putting him in contention for the championship. Nlareb’s journey from the streets to the golf course serves as a powerful reminder of his resilience and perseverance.

Nlareb’s journey at the U.S. Adaptive Open is a testament to his unwavering spirit and dedication to the sport of golf. His journey from battling bacterial meningitis and undergoing amputations to competing in one of the world’s largest championships for disabled golfers is truly remarkable. As he continues to face challenges on the course, Nlareb’s focus remains on the opportunities he has been given and the ability to inspire others through his story. His determination to overcome adversity and continue pursuing his passion for golf is a reflection of his strength and resilience.
