The 2024 U.S. Amateur took place at Hazeltine National Golf Club, and the author, Josh Berhow, attended his first U.S. Amateur. The tournament was an exciting event, with various highlights and memorable moments. Some of the key takeaways from the event included playoff madness, second chances for players, and impressive shots like Ballester’s driver off the par-5 3rd fairway. The author also highlighted the camaraderie between players, such as Ballester and his best friend Navid Mousavi.

One of the memorable moments from the tournament was the playoff to finalize the match-play field, where players had to navigate the difficult par-4 10th hole. Players like Gunnar Broin and Ethan Fang made the most of their second chances during the playoff, with Fang advancing to the quarterfinals. The author also emphasized the supportive relationships among players, such as Luke Clanton’s family cheering him on during his matches.

The U.S. Amateur provided a unique experience for players, caddies, and volunteers who shared the same dining area at the event. The author shared an anecdote about sitting next to player Christian Brand and his caddie Jason Grimmett, who were strategizing for their Round of 16 match. Brand’s Instagram bio humorously references his golf skills and mullet hairstyle. The author also highlighted the exciting match-play dynamics of the par-4 16th hole at Hazeltine.

The author also reflected on the overall experience of attending and covering the U.S. Amateur, emphasizing the affordability of tickets, the intimate access to players and the course, and the lack of grandstands creating a unique viewing experience. The author concluded by discussing the special nature of the U.S. Amateur, describing it as a delightful week in August that embodies the essence of golf. Despite the lack of grandeur compared to major tournaments, the U.S. Amateur offers a unique and intimate experience for fans and players alike.
