New Rule: Is taking a drop from shoulder height still allowed, or is it now considered a penalty?

Golfers have many habits on the golf course that they may not even realize they are doing. However, what happens when these habits run counter to the rules of golf? For example, forgetting to drop a ball from the new “knee height” requirement when taking relief could result in a penalty. Since the Rules of Golf were updated in 2019, players must now drop their ball from knee height when taking relief, regardless of whether they are standing, bending over, or kneeling. The ball cannot touch any part of the body when dropped, and the player cannot influence its motion beyond releasing it.

If a player forgets to drop from knee height, there is good news. As long as they catch the mistake before playing their next stroke, they can correct it without penalty. On the PGA Tour, rookie Sami Valimaki made this mistake during the Mexico Open when he dropped his ball from shoulder height instead of knee height. A rules official informed him of the error, and he was able to correct it, ultimately leading to a better lie and finishing in solo second place.

If a player does not catch the mistake and plays their next stroke after dropping in a wrong way, there are consequences. In Valimaki’s case, fixing his mistake resulted in a much better outcome in terms of prize money and earning FedEx Cup points. By following the rules and correcting his error, Valimaki secured his position on the PGA Tour and put himself in contention for the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

It is important for golfers to be aware of the rules and regulations of the game to avoid penalties and ensure fair play. Making simple mistakes like dropping a ball from the wrong height can have significant consequences, as seen in Valimaki’s case. By staying informed and practicing proper procedures, players can avoid penalties and improve their performance on the course.

In conclusion, golf is a game of precision and adherence to rules. Players must be aware of the latest updates and procedures to avoid penalties and maintain fair play. Simple mistakes like dropping a ball from the wrong height can impact a player’s performance and results. By staying informed, correcting errors, and following the rules, golfers can improve their game and enjoy a more successful experience on the course.
