The Restoration of Pasatiempo Golf Club: A New Era for a Classic Course

Pasatiempo Golf Club stands as a cornerstone of American golf experiences, featuring an outstanding course that reflects both historical significance and natural beauty. Founded by the visionary Marion Hollins and crafted by the acclaimed architect Alister MacKenzie, this gem in Santa Cruz, California, opened its doors in 1929. Known for its unique character and dramatic greens, Pasatiempo not only ranks No. 36 on Golfweek’s Best list of classic courses in the U.S., but also claims the prestigious spot as the No. 2 public-access course in California.

As golf enthusiasts continue to seek exceptional playing experiences, the need for maintaining course quality is crucial. In recent years, however, the putting surfaces at Pasatiempo had begun to show signs of decline. Despite the valiant efforts of the grounds crew, the greens’ health worsened due to various factors, leading to inconsistent playing conditions that disappointed many dedicated golfers. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the club undertook the ambitious task of restoring the putting surfaces to their original glory.

In April 2023, renowned architect Jim Urbina commenced a meticulous restoration project aimed at revitalizing the greens to MacKenzie’s original vision. This significant undertaking did not require closing the course, allowing avid golfers to continue enjoying play throughout the year. The project was carefully scheduled, with the first phase focusing on the front nine in 2023, followed by the back nine in 2024, creating a seamless transition for guests and members alike.

Deciding to renovate a historic course like Pasatiempo comes with its share of complexities. For many, the artistry involved in maintaining the aesthetic appeal often overshadows the scientific aspects essential to golf course management. A deeper understanding of the agronomic challenges faced by the greens is necessary for members and guests to appreciate the massive endeavor undertaken at the club. To explore these scientific elements, I spoke with Justin Mandon, the dedicated superintendent at Pasatiempo, who provided valuable insights.

The previous putting surfaces were composed entirely of Poa annua, a type of grass that poses unique challenges in terms of both maintenance and performance. The roots of Poa annua could fluctuate between three-quarters of an inch and three inches, depending on seasonal conditions. Such shallow root systems contributed to the greens’ vulnerability, a concern exacerbated by limited subsurface drainage inherent in traditional push-up greens.

Push-up greens, characterized by their mixed sand compositions and minimal engineering, have historically suffered from low percolation rates. Over decades of top-dressing and varying management practices, layers formed within the soil profile, creating conditions often described as "black layer" – detrimental to turf health. Compounded by the use of recycled water and limited rainfall typical in California, these conditions negatively impacted soil quality, challenging the crew’s efforts to maintain vibrant and consistent greens.

In seeking a sustainable solution, the decision was made to construct new USGA greens, known for their engineered structures that promote superior drainage and turf performance. These greens are composed of layers including perforated drain pipes, pea gravel, and specialized greens mix, optimized for water and nutrient retention, ensuring a robust growth environment.

Selecting the appropriate grass type was paramount in the restoration project. Following consultations with experts and visits to comparable courses, Urbina and his team opted for the Prestige blend from Tee-2-Green, a mix of Pure Distinction and Pure Select. This combination is tailored to provide significant improvements over the previous conditions, promising consistency and resilience in various weather scenarios.

As the renovation progresses, the benefits of establishing bent grass greens become evident. With the new system in place, the quality of play at Pasatiempo can now sustain excellent conditions for a greater portion of the year. While the former Poa annua greens could only maintain quality for about 80 to 100 days, the new bent grass greens aim for optimal performance for 300 days annually, enhancing the golfing experience and satisfaction of both members and public guests.

Post-renovation management has also transitioned to a more effective regimen. The challenges posed by Poa annua required frequent fungicide applications, hindering both playability and environmental sustainability. In contrast, the new bent grass greens are less susceptible to diseases and provide more controlled growth thanks to a variety of effective growth regulators. This translates to fewer applications and more consistent playing surfaces, elevating the overall experience for everyone who plays at Pasatiempo.

As we embark on this new chapter for Pasatiempo Golf Club, the commitment to maintaining its legendary status remains unwavering. The restoration project not only honors the legacy of Alister MacKenzie but also paves the way for future generations to enjoy one of America’s most iconic golf courses. The combination of art, science, and dedication ensures that Pasatiempo will continue to be a beloved destination for golfers from all walks of life.

In closing, the restoration of the greens at Pasatiempo Golf Club serves as an inspiring example of how tradition and innovation can coexist in the world of golf. It emphasizes the importance of adapting and improving course conditions, reflecting the club’s dedication to providing the best possible playing experience. As the dust settles and the new greens take root, one thing becomes clear: Pasatiempo Golf Club is not just a place to play golf; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the game.
