Putting is a crucial aspect of golf, and many different techniques can be utilized to improve one’s game. One such technique is called “heads-up” putting, where a golfer looks at the target hole instead of the ball during their putting stroke. This concept was recently discussed by Dave Phillips, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher, in a video released by the Titleist Performance Institute. Phillips believes that looking at the hole ahead of putts can improve speed control, comparing it to other sports like basketball and football where athletes focus on their target rather than the object they are interacting with. Phil Mickelson, a six-time major winner, endorsed this idea, calling it simple but brilliant advice for putting.

The idea of heads-up putting is not entirely new, as it has been gradually gaining popularity on the professional golf circuit. Biomechanist Dr. Sasho Mackenzie has conducted studies that suggest golfers who adopt this technique are more successful in their putting performance. This approach involves keeping one’s head and eyes fixed on the target ahead of them, which can provide a direct view of the ball dropping into the hole. By making this change in their putting routine, golfers like Luke Kerr-Dineen have experienced significant improvements in their putting accuracy and confidence on the greens.

When adopting the heads-up putting technique, it is essential not to force it and start gradually incorporating it into one’s practice routine. Some golfers may find that they prefer looking at the hole on most putts, while others may choose to focus on the ball for certain shots. Maintaining a flexible approach to this method is crucial, as it allows golfers to adapt their putting style based on their comfort and performance. Additionally, it is recommended to focus on specific spots on the green, especially on breaking putts, to enhance accuracy and distance control during the stroke.

One of the key benefits of heads-up putting is its ability to enhance focus and concentration during the putting stroke. By fixing one’s gaze on the target and maintaining a “quiet eye” approach, golfers can improve their ability to visualize the path of the putt and execute precise strokes. This technique also promotes a sense of freedom and fluidity in the putting motion, allowing golfers to stroke towards their target with confidence and control. However, it is essential to monitor speed control when using this method, as some golfers may tend to putt more aggressively when adopting a heads-up approach.

Overall, heads-up putting offers a unique perspective on improving putting performance by emphasizing target focus and visualization during the stroke. Golfers can benefit from experimenting with this technique to discover its impact on their consistency and accuracy on the greens. By incorporating elements of heads-up putting into their practice routine, players can enhance their putting skills and elevate their overall performance in the game. As more golfers explore alternative putting methods like heads-up putting, the evolution of putting strategies continues to shape the future of golf instruction and player development.
