Born in 1935 in Puerto Rico, Chi Chi Rodriguez picked up the game of golf by hitting tin cans with a guava tree stick. He joined the U.S. Army at age 19 and later embarked on his professional golf career. Although he didn’t win until age 28, Chi Chi went on to earn eight PGA Tour victories and another 22 on the PGA Tour Champions. Known for his entertaining sword routine on the greens after making big putts, Chi Chi always drew attention whenever he teed it up on the golf course.

Chi Chi Rodriguez’s charisma and showmanship were on full display at the 20th Ryder Cup Matches in 1973, where he was a member of the United States Ryder Cup team. His unique personality and skill on the golf course captivated audiences wherever he went. In 2019, Chi Chi Rodriguez delighted fans when he performed his signature sword routine with a baseball bat ahead of a Colorado Rockies and New York Mets game at Citi Field. During the 2006 Regions Charity Classic Charter Communications Pro-Am at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Ross Bridge in Alabama, Chi Chi Rodriguez teed it up on the fifth hole, demonstrating his skill and expertise on the course. His competitive spirit and love for the game were evident in every shot he took, inspiring admiration from fellow players and fans alike. In 2015, Chi Chi Rodriguez was greeted by Gary Player at the Berenberg Gary Player Invitational Welcome Event at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New York.
