The R&A has revealed the qualification pathways for The 153rd Open at Royal Portrush, one of the most prestigious events in the world of golf. The tournament attracts the top male golfers from various professional tours and amateur championships who compete for the coveted Claret Jug. To ensure that talented golfers from around the world have opportunities to participate, the exemption categories are regularly reviewed and updated.

This year, a new category has been introduced for players competing in LIV Golf. The leading player not already exempt in the Top 5 of the 2025 Individual Season Standings following the completion of LIV Golf Dallas will earn a spot in The 153rd Open. This new exemption adds to the existing qualification routes through the FedEx Cup, the Race to Dubai, and the International Federation Ranking, providing more opportunities for players from different tours to qualify for the championship.

Mark Darbon, Chief Executive at The R&A, emphasized the importance of offering a wide range of opportunities for golfers to qualify for The Open based on their performances on major professional tours. The organization is committed to ensuring that players competing in LIV Golf also have the chance to secure a place in the championship through their individual season standings. The goal is to create a diverse and competitive field at Royal Portrush in July.

The schedule for the Open Qualifying Series in 2025 has been announced, featuring 15 events in 11 countries that offer players a chance to earn a spot in the tournament. Three players have already qualified via the ISPS HANDA Australian Open, with the upcoming 104th New Zealand Open presented by Sky Sport being the first opportunity this year for players to secure a starting berth at Royal Portrush.

Events on the PGA TOUR, including the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the RBC Canadian Open, will provide opportunities for players to qualify for The Open. Similarly, DP World Tour events such as the Investec South African Open Championship and the Italian Open will offer spots in the championship. In Asia, the International Series Macau presented by Wynn, the Mizuno Open, and the KOLON Korea Open will also serve as avenues for golfers to book their place at Royal Portrush.

Regional and Final Qualifying events, open to both professional and amateur golfers worldwide who meet the entry criteria, will take place at various venues in Great Britain and Ireland in June and July. These events will serve as the final chance for players to secure a place in The 153rd Open. The overall aim is to create a diverse and competitive field at Royal Portrush, showcasing the best talent in the world of golf.
