If you are looking to play the best golf courses in Massachusetts, Golfweek’s annual ranking of public-access and private courses is a great place to start. These rankings are determined by a nationwide network of raters who evaluate courses based on 10 criteria and provide an overall rating for each course. The average of these ratings is used to create the Golfweek’s Best course rankings.

The public-access courses listed in the ranking offer various ways for the public to access them, whether it be through daily green fees, a resort stay, or an affiliated hotel. Membership is not required to play at these courses. The rankings include criteria such as whether the course is modern (built after 1960) or classic (built before 1960), with the number preceding the designation indicating where the course ranks on Golfweek’s Best lists for top 200 modern and classic courses in the U.S.

Some of the top public-access courses in Massachusetts include Cape Cod National in Brewster, Miacomet in Nantucket, Farm Neck in Oak Bluffs, Red Tail in Devens, The Ranch in Southwick, and more. These courses offer a variety of challenges and settings for golfers of all skill levels to enjoy.

On the other hand, the private courses listed in the ranking are exclusive to members and their guests. These courses include well-known names like The Country Club (Composite) in Brookline, Myopia Hunt Club in Hamilton, Eastward Ho! in Chatham, Essex in Manchester-by-the-Sea, and more. These courses offer a more private and intimate golfing experience for their members.

Whether you prefer public-access or private courses, Massachusetts has a variety of options for golf enthusiasts to explore. From the stunning views at Cape Cod National to the challenging layout of The Country Club, there is something for everyone in this diverse golfing landscape. So grab your clubs and hit the links at one of these top-ranked courses for an unforgettable golfing experience in Massachusetts.
