Reflecting on Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge: A Numerical Analysis in Anticipation of its 25th Anniversary

The 2024 Hero World Challenge is set to be a special event as it celebrates its 25th anniversary. Tiger Woods will be hosting the tournament for the 25th time at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas, with a field of 20 golfers competing over 72 holes of stroke play to determine the winner. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the defending champion, having finished runner-up to Viktor Hovland in both 2021 and 2022.

The event first took place in January 2000, with Tom Lehman emerging as the winner at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Davis Love III won the event later that year at Sherwood Country Club in California, the first of his two World Challenge titles. Only two World Challenges have been decided by a playoff, with Woods on the losing end both times. Graeme McDowell won in 2010, followed by Zach Johnson defeating Woods in 2013.

Albany Golf Club has hosted the event nine times, making it the second-longest host of the World Challenge. Woods holds the record for the most tournament wins with five, as well as five runner-up finishes. Hero is the event’s fifth sponsor and the longest-running partner, with past sponsors including Target, Northwestern Mutual, Chevron, and Williams. In 2012, the event did not have a sponsor and was simply known as the World Challenge.

Jordan Spieth produced a dominant performance in 2014 at Isleworth Country Club, winning by 10 strokes. The event expanded to 18 players in 2008 before increasing to 20 in 2021. Seventeen golfers have won the Hero World Challenge, with four of them claiming victory more than once. The 2024 event marks the silver anniversary for the World Challenge, with notable records such as Spieth’s margin of victory and Bubba Watson’s lowest score at Albany set in previous years.
