Review of the Mizuno Pro S Golf Ball

Mizuno recently launched their Pro range of golf balls, including the Pro X and the Pro S. The Pro S is a three-layer ball with a high-speed ionomer mantle, a soft butadiene rubber core, and an ultra-soft urethane cover. It features a 332 Axial Flow Dimple design to reduce drag and improve performance in all weather conditions. The Pro S is designed to meet the demands of golfers at the highest level through advanced aerodynamics, enhanced speed, and exceptional control.

During testing, the Pro S felt noticeably softer than the Pro X, with less audible feedback on chipping and pitching shots. However, it reacted sharply on the second and third bounce, showing a healthy amount of spin on greenside shots. Indoor testing with a driver swing speed of 108 mph suggested that the Pro S didn’t perform optimally compared to the Pro X, resulting in slightly slower ball speeds and less carry distance off the tee.

Mizuno claims that the Pro S offers lower long game spin, which was evident in testing with the driver and mid-irons. The ball spun less and flew lower through the air compared to the Pro X, providing above-average distance and stopping power with mid-iron shots. On a 50-yard pitch shot, the Pro S also delivered lower spin rates, showcasing its versatility and control in various situations.

The Pro S offers a significantly different spin profile and trajectory compared to the Pro X, making it a suitable choice for golfers looking to reduce spin and height on their shots. While the Pro X may have broader appeal, the Pro S is a great option for players struggling with ballooning drives or excessive spin off the tee. With its premium look and affordable price point of £40 or $47.99 per dozen, the Pro S represents excellent value among premium golf balls.

Overall, the Mizuno Pro S is a high-quality golf ball that caters to golfers seeking advanced performance and control on the course. Its soft feel, lower spin rates, and consistent trajectory make it a reliable option for players looking to enhance their game. Despite giving up some short game control compared to the Pro X, the Pro S offers a simpler solution for adjusting spin and trajectory on shots. With its premium design and competitive pricing, the Pro S is a standout choice for golfers looking to elevate their performance with a top-tier golf ball.
