Titleist Vokey Wedges: A Detailed Review of the L Grind Option

Titleist Vokey wedges are a popular choice among golfers, offering a wide range of sole options to suit any swing type, condition, or shot type. Many professionals use Vokey wedges on tour, and they can be found in the bags of golfers on local courses as well. Recently, Vokey released a new option called the L Grind for their 58 and 60-degree lob wedges. This low bounce, 4-degree grind allows the leading edge of the wedge to get close to the ground while still offering trailing edge, heel, and toe relief. The L Grind is designed for shots off tight and firm lies, making it a versatile option for a variety of playing conditions.

The L Grind is only available in Vokey’s Raw finish, which will rust over time and use. The club has a polished look to the raw metal, making it hard to distinguish from a Tour Chrome finish. The L Grind has a similar look to the M Grind, with a shaped sole that aids in turf interaction. Golfers may be hesitant to try a wedge with 4 degrees of bounce, especially in softer playing conditions, but the L Grind can offer surprising results. One golfer in Metro Detroit, who typically plays with higher bounce wedges, was impressed by the performance of the L Grind on both tight lies and deep rough around the green.

On the course, the 58.04L wedge proved to be effective in deep rough, providing easy and drama-free shots. The L Grind’s ability to glide through the grass with little effort was noticeable, and the wedge performed well on partial and full shots. Off the fairway, the L Grind offered shallow divots and great turf interaction, making it a versatile choice for a range of distances and shot types. Spin was high and predictable, and the wedge could produce low, high-spin shots that checked up nicely on the green. In bunker shots, the L Grind showed good bounce when the face was opened, although it didn’t perform as well in softer traps.

Overall, the L Grind proved to be a solid option that is more versatile than its 4-degree bounce suggests. Despite initial reservations about using a low bounce wedge, the L Grind performed well in a variety of playing conditions. Golfers with steeper swings or who play in softer conditions can benefit from the L Grind’s capabilities. The wedge offers confidence to players with poor wedge play, allowing them to swing faster and hit more solid shots. In conclusion, the Titleist Vokey L Grind wedge is a versatile and reliable option that can handle a wide range of shots on the golf course.
