Tate Boys Golf Makes History with District Championship Win
The Tate boys golf team has turned a new leaf this season, rebounding from last year’s disappointing performance to claim their first District 1-3A golf championship. This historic victory took place on October 24 at the picturesque Stonebrook Golf Club in Pace, Florida. A significant milestone for the Aggies, their triumph reflects hard work, determination, and teamwork; core values that have driven them throughout the season.
Speaking about the team’s impressive turnaround, junior golfer Baylor Tate stated, “We just feel really satisfied because of how much work we’ve put in this past year. We didn’t have a good finish last year, so we promised ourselves we were going to come back even stronger and even better the next year.” This dedication has clearly paid off, as the Aggies achieved a remarkable score of 305, finishing six strokes ahead of their closest competitor, Pace High School.
Both the Tate and Pace teams qualified for the upcoming Region 1-3A championship, scheduled for November 3 at Twin Rivers Golf Club in Oviedo. It’s worth noting that the top two teams from each district and the top two individual golfers not part of those teams secure spots in the regional tournament. This competitive nature sets the stage for an exciting display of golf in the imminent rounds.
Leading Tate’s efforts at the district championship was Touchstone, who delivered a notable performance by shooting a score of 72, which placed him in a tie for third. He was closely trailed by Caleb Parker from Niceville and Joshua Kelley from Pace, with Kelley ultimately clinching the prestigious title of low medalist after prevailing in a playoff against Parker. Touchstone’s commitment to maintaining focus and determination throughout the match highlights the mental fortitude essential for success in golf.
In addition to Touchstone’s strong showing, Tate’s roster also featured other standout performers. Freshman Jaxson Thomason finished in sixth place with a score of 73, while senior Parker Hassell secured ninth place with a score of 79. The overall team effort was a crucial component of the Aggies’ success and showcases the depth of talent present within their squad.
Further emphasizing Tate’s determination was the grit and courage shown by their players throughout the tournament. While scores and standings carry significance, Touchstone stressed the importance of each golfer focusing on their own game and avoiding distractions. "Always stay focused, keep pushing, and remember that hard work pays off," he emphasized, encapsulating the team’s philosophy.
With Hassell being the only senior on this year’s team, the future looks promising for Tate boys golf. Returning members like Touchstone and junior Ben Robinson, who also competed in last year’s districts, bring vital experience into their upcoming regional match. Preparing for the next challenge, Touchstone shared the team’s strategy: “We’ll treat it just like districts. Just stay in the process and don’t focus on results.”
As Tate celebrated their district victory, they weren’t alone in their success on the local golf scene. Gulf Breeze’s girls golf team also clinched a district title, finishing the day with a combined score of 340, securing their first district win since 2019. Dolphins junior Michelle Burt was particularly impressive, emerging victorious with a score of 77 after triumphing in a two-hole playoff against Niceville’s Tenley Sharron.
Gulf Breeze’s success also included contributions from their other top performers. Senior Riley Bounds and junior Addyson Davidson finished fifth and tied for eighth, respectively, contributing to the Dolphins’ strong showing. With such a solid foundation, Gulf Breeze is also gearing up for their regional match, set for November 4 at Hawkstone Country Club in Gainesville.
Pace High School’s girls team also secured a spot in the regional tournament due to their second-place finish with a score of 350. Freshman Gianna Dettling led the Patriots with an impressive score of 78, earning herself an individual berth to the next level. The regionals promise to showcase a high level of competition, given the depth and talent displayed in recent district championships.
In other local news, South Walton’s boys team came out on top at the District 1-2A tournament, finishing with a combined score of 307, nine strokes ahead of Arnold High School. Both teams will advance to the Region 1-2A tournament, taking place on November 4 at Fleming Island Golf Club. This tournament will be critical for both teams as they aim for further success.
Lastly, the Northview girls team made waves in the District 1-1A tournament, claiming the title thanks to senior Anna Kunkel’s stellar performance. Kunkel’s score of 69 secured her victory over Pensacola Catholic’s Elizabeth Palmer. Kunkel’s achievement guarantees her participation in the upcoming Region 1-1A championship.
As the local golf teams prepare for their respective regional championships, the focus remains on the lessons learned and the teamwork that brought them this far. With a promising mix of skill and determination, both the boys and girls teams are set to take their talents to the next level, showcasing the dedication of high school athletes in the Florida golfing community. The journey continues, and the excitement surrounding the upcoming tournaments promises to unfold even more stories of achievement and persistence.
