TaylorMade’s Milled Grind 5 Wedges: A Casual Dive into Short-Game Greatness

Hey there, golf enthusiasts! If you’ve been itching for some updated gear for your short game, you’ll definitely want to check out TaylorMade’s latest release: the Milled Grind 5 (MG5) wedge family. TaylorMade isn’t just dropping another piece of equipment; they’re calling this a major leap forward in short-game technology. That’s some hefty praise, but after taking a closer look, we absolutely get it.

What’s the Buzz Around the MG5?

So here’s the scoop: TaylorMade unveiled their MG5 wedges after a sneak peek at the Proto designs on tour. You know when you see the best of the best using a product? That’s usually a good sign! These babies were created with input from top-notch tour players, including the remarkable Collin Morikawa himself. As Matt Bovee, the Director of Product Creation for Irons and Wedges, put it, having great feel around the greens is crucial, and the MG5 is crafted to deliver just that.

What Truly Sets the MG5 Apart?

Fully Forged for Premium Feel: This time around, TaylorMade has gone all-out by making the MG5 the first in their line to be fully forged from soft carbon steel. What does that mean for you? It means exceptional feel and feedback, making those delicate chips and pitches feel incredibly responsive. Plus, the forging process gives consistent shape, weight, and performance. Yeah, this is serious business.

New Saw-Milled Grooves: If you’re a fan of spin, you’re gonna love the new saw-milled grooves. TaylorMade designed them to be sharper and more aggressive, pushing the groove geometry closer to what the USGA allows. The result? Increased spin that’ll have your ball stopping on a dime, giving you the edge over the competition.

Ready for Rainy Days

Golf doesn’t stop just because of a little rain, right? The MG5’s raw face finish, combined with new Spin Tread Technology, helps manage water so you can still hold onto that spin and control, even when the weather isn’t cooperating. In fact, these wedges retain 13% more spin in wet conditions compared to their predecessor, the MG4. Yes, please!

Tour-Approved and In Demand

Let’s talk shop: last week at the Wyndham Championship, there were 16 players on the course rocking MG5 wedges. That includes golf heavy-hitters like Collin Morikawa, Ben Griffin, and Tommy Fleetwood. So if those guys are putting their trust in these sticks, you know they can’t be beaten!

Grinds Galore: Tailored to You

Now, let’s shift gears and dive into the different grind options available with the MG5s. There are six tour-inspired grinds, each curated by TaylorMade’s very own wedge wizard, Greg Cesario. Whether you’re a player who hits from deep rough or someone who prefers a tight lie, these grinds cater to your unique swing and turf conditions.

When Cesario says, “The MG5 lineup represents the closest thing to the perfect array of grinds,” you know they’ve done their homework!

Standard Bounce Grinds

SB Grind (Standard Bounce)

This one’s designed for everybody. With a full sole and trailing edge relief, it’s perfect for all swing types and turf conditions, making it super versatile.

SC Grind (Mid-Bounce)

The SC grind comes highly recommended by club pros. It features heel, toe, and trailing edge relief, giving you some serious greenside versatility.

SX Grind (New)

The SX grind is a fresh addition with a wider sole and curved shape. It’s built for stability in bunkers and thick rough, acknowledging that some of us do find ourselves in tricky spots.

Specialized Grinds

HB Grind (High Bounce)

This grind is best suited for steep swings or soft turf. It’s designed to be forgiving and ensures a quick exit from the turf.

LB Grind (Low Bounce)

Now, if you’ve got a shallow swing or often play tight lies, the LB grind is your buddy. It helps prevent digging into the turf thanks to its modified C-grind.

TW Grind (Tiger Woods Inspired)

Last but not least, there’s the Tiger Woods-inspired grind, updated to his latest specs. This grind’s camber and leading-edge blend are all about boosting performance for players looking for a little extra zing.

Customization: Make It Yours

One of the coolest features of the MG5 wedges is the MyMG5 program, which lets you customize your wedge like a pro. You can add personal touches like a name or slogan (up to 12 characters), choose from 15 paint fill colors, and pick from over 50 logos. You can even select from four unique finishes, including Tour Raw, Aged Copper, Chrome, and Charcoal. Talk about personalization!

Pricing and Availability: Get Ready to Buy

Alright, let’s get down to brass tacks about pricing and when you can snag these bad boys. You can pre-order starting August 7 at TaylorMadeGolf.com, with a full launch in stores on September 4. The standard MG5 wedges will set you back $199.99, while the TW Grind will be $219.99. They also come stock with some high-quality shaft options from True Temper and Recoil, making it a solid investment for any short game aficionado.

So, be on the lookout for the TaylorMade MG5 wedges this coming fall. With their forgiving feel, innovative tech, and the ability to customize, they’re definitely worth considering if you want to step up your short game. Happy golfing!
