The upcoming 2024 U.S. Open at Pinehurst will present challenges for golfers as they navigate the baked-out slopes of the course. To help players better understand how to use the ground to their advantage, a daily Ground Game series is being launched. The series will consist of daily articles that provide tips and techniques for using the ground to improve one’s golf game.

One technique that can be particularly useful for golfers who feel uncomfortable putting from off the green is the bump-and-run. This shot is a low chip that lands short of the green but has enough momentum to propel the ball on and scoot it toward the hole. To execute this shot effectively, golfers should grab a short iron and experiment with different clubs to see which works best for them.

When setting up to hit a bump-and-run shot, it is important to favor the front foot and ensure that the nose is over a spot an inch in front of the ball. This stance helps promote crisp contact with the ball, which is essential for a successful shot. Additionally, making practice swings that focus on keeping the club’s shaft leaning forward through the impact zone can help ensure clean contact and proper ball trajectory.

During the bump-and-run shot, it is crucial to minimize wrist action both back and through the swing. By keeping the wrists quiet and not trying to scoop the ball, golfers can achieve a more consistent and effective shot. This swing is similar to a putting stroke, so maintaining a smooth, controlled motion is key to success. By following these tips and techniques, golfers can improve their ability to navigate the challenging terrain at Pinehurst and enhance their overall golf game.
