The Pros are Raving About TaylorMade’s P7CB Iron – Here’s Why

TaylorMade recently introduced their new P7CB long irons at the Wells Fargo Championship, where they were still considered a prototype. Matt Bovee, the manufacturer’s director of iron creation, nervously handed these prototype irons to top players like Rory McIlroy, hoping for positive feedback. When McIlroy only took four swings with the P7CB 4-iron before declaring it “good to go,” Bovee was pleasantly surprised. This quick approval from McIlroy led to the iron gaining traction on the Tour before it was even officially released to the public.

McIlroy’s positive experience with the P7CB irons led to other players like Collin Morikawa and Tommy Fleetwood also adopting them after only a few swings. Morikawa specifically appreciated the higher trajectory and increased spin rate that the P7CB offered, helping him achieve the ball flight and control he desired. The quick adoption of these irons by top players amazed Bovee, who had never seen an iron gain popularity amongst professionals so rapidly.

Despite the rapid adoption by Tour players, TaylorMade designed the P7CB iron with more than just professionals in mind. The iron is geared towards single-digit handicaps but offers performance benefits that could appeal to a wider range of golfers. With features like forged hollow body construction and FLTD CG positioning, the P7CB aims to provide forgiveness, playability, and improved launch conditions for a more discerning player.

The P7CB irons feature innovative technology like SpeedFoam Air, which reduces vibrations for better sound and feel while maintaining a fast, flexible face. The Thru-Slot Speed Pocket increases face flexibility to maximize ball speed and distance, especially on low face strikes. The Tour-inspired shaping of the P7CB includes less offset in the long irons, a thin topline, and a shorter blade length, catering to the preferences of skilled golfers.

TaylorMade focused on creating a playable iron that would appeal to a larger audience than just professionals with the P7CB. They wanted the iron to offer a combination of feel, technology, and consistency that would attract a wide range of golfers looking to improve their game. While not everyone may make a decision after only a few swings like the pros, TaylorMade believes that the performance and design of the P7CB will stand out in head-to-head testing with other irons on the market.

If you’re considering upgrading your irons for the 2024 season, the TaylorMade P7CB could be a worthy contender. Its combination of advanced technology, player-focused design, and positive feedback from top players like McIlroy and Morikawa make it a compelling option for those looking to elevate their performance on the course. With features like forged construction, FLTD CG, SpeedFoam Air, and Tour-inspired shaping, the P7CB aims to deliver a blend of beauty and performance for golfers of varying skill levels. Consider trying out the P7CB at a fitting location like True Spec Golf to see if it’s the right fit for your game.
