2023 saw many interesting rules incidents in the world of golf that left lasting impacts on the players involved. From Patrick Reed to Carlotta Ciganda, several golfers were caught in situations that tested their knowledge of the rules of the game. Here’s a look back at some of the biggest rules issues that made headlines in the golf world this past year.

In January, Patrick Reed found himself in a tricky situation during the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. His tee shot got stuck high up in a palm tree on the 17th hole, leading to a unique rules interpretation by a rules official. Reed ultimately made a bogey on the hole but finished second in the tournament, just one stroke behind Rory McIlroy.

During the first round of the Masters in April, Collin Morikawa’s ball moved on a slick Augusta green, prompting a discussion about Rule 13.1d. Morikawa was able to replace his ball without penalty after it moved accidentally on the putting green, showing how important it is for players to know the rules in such situations.

Brooks Koepka’s caddie, Ricky Elliott, raised eyebrows at the Masters when he appeared to mouth the word “five” during the first round. This led to speculation about potential rule violations, but Koepka clarified that there was no communication with other players about the club he was using. Ultimately, Koepka avoided a penalty in this incident.

Wilson Furr faced a challenging situation during the Lemon Suncoast Classic when he accepted a cart ride during the round, unaware that it was prohibited by a Model Local Rule. This resulted in a two-shot penalty for all three members of his group and played a significant role in Furr missing the cut, affecting his status on the Korn Ferry Tour.

In a LIV Golf event in Singapore, Brooks Koepka took relief from a fan village after losing a tee shot into the trees. Koepka argued that the fan village was a temporary immovable obstruction, allowing him to get a clean line to the green. Despite skepticism from some observers, Koepka was granted relief and managed to make par on the hole.

Tommy Kuhl experienced a heartbreaking turn of events during a U.S. Open local qualifier when he realized he had breached a rule by repairing aeration marks on the green. This mistake led to his disqualification from the event despite shooting a course-record 62, underscoring the importance of knowing the rules of the game.

These incidents highlight the need for players at all levels to have a strong understanding of the rules of golf to avoid costly mistakes on the course. Whether it’s getting relief from unusual lies or navigating tricky situations with caddies, being well-versed in the rules can make a significant difference in a player’s performance and standings in tournaments. As the golf community reflects on these rules incidents from 2023, it serves as a valuable reminder of the importance of rules knowledge and adherence in the game of golf.
