The Rise of Synthetic Turf in Golf: A Game-Changer for Courses Everywhere

The golf landscape is undergoing a remarkable transformation, with synthetic turf emerging as a vital player in these changes. Once reserved primarily for backyard practice setups, fake grass is gaining traction in diverse public venues across the United States. One of the most notable developments in this synthetic movement is the opening of the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida—home to the innovative TGL. This trend toward synthetic turf is not limited to iconic locations; it’s also making waves at lesser-known courses nationwide.

Shortland Golf Club: A Case Study in Synthetic Turf Innovation

One of the latest additions to the synthetic turf movement is the Shortland Golf Club in Portland, Oregon. Created by Mike Fritz—a passionate golfer and former Nike Golf footwear developer—Shortland fills a critical gap for golf enthusiasts in the area. Recognizing that there was a lack of accessible par-3 courses on the city’s west side, Fritz embarked on a mission to create a unique golfing experience.

Identifying Opportunities in Portland

Mike Fritz had a clear vision for Shortland Golf Club but faced challenges typical of the golf industry, including soaring land prices. "The only way to bring my idea to life was to find something that was closing or ready to be sold," he stated. His opportunity came when he acquired a 31-acre parcel of land formerly occupied by the Sandelie Golf Course, which had ceased operations late in 2022.

The Vision Takes Shape

Fritz’s approach was strategic; he understood that building a full-scale course was not only labor-intensive but could become a financial burden as well. In his experience, managing a golf course can be akin to running a restaurant—appealing in theory, but taxing in reality. Instead, he envisioned a smaller, more manageable layout that would provide an enjoyable experience without the associated headaches of traditional course management.

Blending Design with Synthetic Advantages

Having played many courses with innovative designs, Fritz was influenced by some standout experiences, including a par-3 setup at Skamania Lodge and the Bad Little Nine at Scottsdale National Golf Club. He sought to create a hybrid course that combines design subtleties with the numerous benefits of synthetic turf.

For assistance in bringing this vision to life, Fritz partnered with Jackson Kahn Design, renowned for their work on the Bad Little Nine. Connor Dougherty, one of Jackson Kahn’s lead designers based in Portland, had experience with backyard setups and was excited about his first public-access course project.

Creating a Challenging and Enjoyable Layout

The collaborative goal between Fritz and Dougherty was clear: to design a course with character that would challenge players of all skill levels. "We wanted greens that would allow for creativity while being a fun experience for everyone," Dougherty explained. This input translated into a 19-hole par-3 layout meticulously crafted to feature stunning greens and varied challenges.

The Benefits of Modern Synthetic Turf

One of the significant shifts in the adoption of synthetic turf is the technological advancements that have dramatically improved its playability. Unlike the inferior versions of years past, today’s synthetic turf mimics natural grass remarkably well, offering a playing experience that maintains quality and performance.

Course Features and Accessibility

The 19-hole Shortland Golf Club, structured like a clover around a central clubhouse, offers a range of hole lengths from 59 to 104 yards. The routing of the course allows players to engage with the clubhouse several times during their round. A notable addition is the “Heckler’s Deck,” where spectators can cheer on golfers without adding pressure to the game.

Maintenance Made Easy

All the tees, bunkers, and putting greens at Shortland utilize synthetic turf from Celebrity Greens. These innovations eliminate the need for typical maintenance tasks such as raking, watering, and mowing. Additionally, while the greens require rolled and sanded attention to keep them smooth, the synthetic materials reduce long-term care concerns, making the operation of Shortland both efficient and eco-friendly.

A New Era in Golfing Experiences

Since its opening in early August, Shortland Golf Club has been attracting local golfers and enthusiasts alike. Recently, it added another layer of appeal with a 19-hole putting and chipping course known as The Nest. Whether players choose to use a flat-stick or a wedge, the experience remains authentic despite the synthetic nature of the grass.

Discover Your Next Golf Experience

As synthetic turf continues to redefine the golf experience across the country, venues like Shortland Golf Club exemplify how innovation can meet demand. If you’re looking to explore unique and emerging courses in your area, consider utilizing our Course Finder tool to uncover hidden gems near you. Indeed, while the grass may be fake, the experience is entirely authentic, inviting players of all levels to immerse themselves in the game they love.

In an era of rapid evolution within the golf world, synthetic turf is not just a trend but a significant shift toward making golf more accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for everyone involved.
