Collin Morikawa’s Shifting Strategy: Analyzing His 2025 Season and Equipment Adjustments

Collin Morikawa, a two-time major champion, faced unexpected challenges during the 2025 PGA Tour season, falling short of his usual dominance and failing to secure a victory. While this may have disappointed fans and analysts alike, his selection for Keegan Bradley’s U.S. Ryder Cup team at Bethpage Black serves as a reminder of his resilience and potential rebound. As he seeks to rediscover his top form, Morikawa is making significant adjustments to his equipment, particularly focusing on his irons and putting techniques.

Morikawa’s decision to add two degrees of loft to every iron in his bag is particularly noteworthy. In an interview on the popular podcast "Foreplay," he remarked, “Crazy enough, I just added two degrees to every iron as of yesterday. Two degrees of loft.” This adjustment reflects a broader trend in professional golf where players are increasingly focused on spin control and distance consistency. Morikawa cited issues with under-spinning his shots, which can lead to unpredictable distances. “Spin is the most important thing to control,” he elaborated, emphasizing the correlation between spin rates and distance accuracy.

As a golfer who prides himself on precision, Morikawa’s understanding of spin dynamics is informed by conversations with some of the sport’s best, including Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm. Both players have demonstrated that mastering spin rates is a key component of their gameplay. Morikawa’s decision to modify his clubs is rooted in his commitment to improving his performance and regaining confidence.

Beyond his iron adjustments, Morikawa has also been re-evaluating his putting strategy. After a challenging year on the greens, which saw him ranking 153rd on the PGA Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting, he made a noteworthy change by switching from his trusted TaylorMade TP Soto putter to a TaylorMade Tour V head with a center shaft. Such modifications are crucial, especially for a player of Morikawa’s caliber, as the ability to sink putts consistently can make or break a tournament performance.

Additionally, Morikawa has experimented with different putting grips. While he has been known to utilize the claw grip, he is not strictly confined to this technique. During the same interview, he candidly admitted, “No, I don’t know what I am honestly.” His candidness reflects the internal struggle many professional golfers face when trying to find their rhythm on the greens. Morikawa stated that he sometimes switches grips mid-round based on how he feels, indicating his adaptive approach to the game.

His flexibility with grips speaks to a deeper philosophy of continuous improvement. “The reason why I keep switching is I find certain things in one grip that feels comfortable,” he explains. His ability to switch back and forth between conventional and claw grips highlights his quest for optimal performance. However, he recognizes the potential setbacks of this inconsistency. His goal moving forward is to focus on a single grip to establish greater familiarity and confidence in his putting stroke.

The adjustments Morikawa is making to his equipment reflect a broader trend in the golf world, where players are not only being innovative but also willing to reassess and adapt their strategies in response to their performance setbacks. The process of trial and error is vital for professional athletes, as it allows them to learn from their experiences and make necessary changes to enhance consistency.

As the PGA Tour season progresses, Morikawa’s journey of self-discovery and adaptation will be closely monitored by fans and analysts alike. His recent experiences serve as a reminder that even elite athletes face their struggles and setbacks, but they also have the tools and resources to make effective changes. Golf is a sport that thrives on precision and accuracy, making Morikawa’s commitment to refining his gear and technique all the more important.

Looking ahead to the Ryder Cup and future tournaments, the impact of these adjustments on Morikawa’s overall performance remains a hot topic. His ability to execute well under pressure and adapt his game plan will be essential as he competes alongside top players on the international stage. Alumni of the Ryder Cup have historically used the event to springboard their careers, and Morikawa will be no exception if he can find his stride.

In conclusion, Collin Morikawa’s evolving strategy exemplifies the dynamic and intricate nature of professional golf. While the 2025 season posed challenges, his proactive approach to adjusting his equipment and technique demonstrates a commitment to excellence. As fans eagerly anticipate his next steps, Morikawa stands as a testament to the power of resilience, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of greatness in the competitive world of golf.
