Tommy Fleetwood ties course record in Abu Dhabi with a new putter

Tommy Fleetwood made a strong return to competitive golf after a month-long hiatus, taking the lead in the first round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship with a spectacular 10-under 62. Fleetwood credited his success to a new TaylorMade putter that he had been practicing with during his break. The change in equipment seemed to pay off, as Fleetwood’s putting was exceptional during the round, needing only 26 putts and averaging 1.5 putts per hole. He attributed his improved putting to a chance encounter with former golfers Ken Brown and David Howell, who provided valuable insights into his putting technique.

Fleetwood’s strong start in Abu Dhabi was a result of his dedication to improving his putting performance, which he felt was not reaching its full potential in the latter part of 2024. Despite being a long-standing student of putting coach Phil Kenyon, Fleetwood found new inspiration in his conversations with Brown and Howell, leading to a breakthrough in his approach to putting. The discussion with the experienced golfers helped Fleetwood refine his stroke and focus on his head movement during putting, ultimately resulting in a record-tying round at the championship.

Fleetwood’s lead at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship was one shot ahead of Thorbjorn Olesen and Johannes Veerman, with Tyrrell Hatton closely following in a tie for fourth place at 8 under. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, who recently adjusted his swing, posted a respectable 5-under 67 to tie for 18th place. Despite his solid performance, McIlroy felt that he lacked imagination in his shot making and focused too much on his swing mechanics during the round.

The British golfer expressed his gratitude for the valuable insights he gained from the conversations with Brown and Howell, emphasizing the importance of learning from experts in the field. Fleetwood’s newfound approach to putting, combined with his natural talent and dedication to improvement, contributed to his exceptional performance in the first round of the championship. With eight birdies and an eagle, Fleetwood showcased his skill and precision on the greens, setting himself up for a strong start in the tournament.

The decision to switch to a new TaylorMade putter proved to be a game-changer for Fleetwood, as he putted with confidence and precision throughout the round, reading the greens effectively and maintaining perfect pace control. The success of the equipment change, coupled with the guidance from experienced professionals like Brown and Howell, boosted Fleetwood’s confidence and performance on the course. As he continues to fine-tune his putting technique and build on his momentum in the championship, Fleetwood is poised to make a mark in the DP World Tour’s penultimate event and further solidify his reputation as a top contender in the world of professional golf.
