The Grant Thornton Invitational, a mixed-team event, is set to begin with a last-minute replacement teammate for World No. 1 Nelly Korda. Tony Finau, who was originally scheduled to team up with Korda, had to withdraw from the event due to recovery from an injury. Finau also withdrew from last week’s Hero World Challenge, leading to speculation about his future in golf. However, Finau clarified that he recently had surgery on his left knee and is focused on getting fully healthy. He expressed disappointment at having to withdraw from the event but thanked Korda for her understanding and support.

Korda and Finau, who finished T4 in the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational last year, had a strong partnership with a total score of 23 under, just three shots off the winning score. Despite Finau’s absence, PGA Tour veteran Daniel Berger will step in to partner with Korda for this year’s tournament. The event brings together players from the PGA Tour and LPGA, showcasing mixed-team competition and diversity in the game. Finau expressed his gratitude to his partner, Grant Thornton, for their support and for promoting collaboration between the two tours.

Nelly Korda, who recently ranked among the top 10 highest-paid female athletes for 2024, is a prominent figure on the LPGA Tour with multiple wins to her name. Her partnership with Finau in the previous Grant Thornton Invitational was a highlight for both players, as they showcased their skills and teamwork on the course. Finau’s withdrawal from the event highlights the physical demands and challenges that professional golfers face, as injuries can impact their ability to compete at the highest level. However, Finau remains optimistic about his recovery and looks forward to returning to competition in the new year.

The PGA Tour’s announcement of Finau’s withdrawal included a statement from the player himself, explaining the reasons behind his decision. Finau expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete but emphasized the importance of focusing on his recovery to ensure his long-term health and success in the game. The support and understanding shown by Korda and the tournament organizers reflect the camaraderie and sportsmanship that are prevalent in professional golf. Finau’s commitment to returning to competition highlights his dedication to the sport and his desire to continue competing at the highest level.

Overall, the Grant Thornton Invitational promises to be an exciting event with top players from both the PGA Tour and LPGA competing in a mixed-team format. While Finau’s absence may be disappointing for fans, Berger’s inclusion ensures that Korda will have a strong partner for the tournament. The event not only showcases the talent and skill of the players but also promotes collaboration and diversity within the sport. Finau’s focus on recovery and his determination to return to competition demonstrate the resilience and commitment required to succeed in professional golf. Fans can look forward to an exciting competition as Korda and Berger team up to take on the field in the Grant Thornton Invitational.
