Ben James, a sophomore at the University of Virginia, recently competed in the NCAA Division I men’s golf championship. In a dramatic finish on Memorial Day, James missed a birdie putt on the 18th hole of Omni La Costa Resort & Spa’s North Course, finishing in a six-way tie for second, one shot behind the champion, Hiroshi Tai of Georgia Tech. Despite not being pleased with his final putt, James mentioned that the stroke penalty he received on the first round for slow play was the most painful aspect of the tournament.

The slow play penalty occurred on the par-4 17th hole during the first round, where James and his playing partner, Baard Skogen of Texas Tech, were both assessed one-stroke penalties. Their third group member, Ben Lorenz of Oklahoma, did not receive a penalty. Despite the setback, James rallied over the next two rounds with scores of 71-69 to be in contention going into the final round, where he ultimately finished one shot behind the winner.

James expressed his frustration over the penalty, mentioning that it was a fine line in golf and that the warning for slow play came after a series of unfortunate events on the 13th hole. Following the first round, he spent 30 minutes discussing the situation with NCAA officials to provide his perspective. Despite the disappointing outcome, he felt it was important to voice his concerns and was able to move on from the issue as he continued to compete in the tournament.

With the support of fans and the competitive atmosphere of the championship, James was able to focus on his game and enjoy the experience. Despite the setback from the slow play penalty, he mentioned that he played great over the next two days and had fun on the course. Looking ahead to future opportunities, James and the Virginia team were set to face Auburn in the match-play quarterfinals, providing him with more chances to showcase his skills on the golf course.

In conclusion, Ben James faced challenges during the NCAA Division I men’s golf championship, including a slow play penalty that affected his final standings. However, he managed to overcome the setback and perform well over the course of the tournament. With a positive attitude and a focus on enjoying the experience, James showcased his talent and determination on the golf course. As he continues to compete at a high level, he remains focused on improving his game and making the most of future opportunities in the sport.
