The 2025 Sentry at Kapalua in Maui marked the beginning of the new year for professional golfers. Xander Schauffele, the highest-ranked player in the field, took a moment to reflect on his performance in 2024. Schauffele expressed disappointment in his wedge play, specifically citing issues with his approach shots. Despite ranking sixth in SG: Approach the Green overall, Schauffele struggled with closer shots, ranking between 45th and 70th in various categories from 125 to 200 yards. His performance from 50 to 125 yards, which is considered prime wedge territory, was particularly troubling as he ranked 171st, averaging 21 feet, 5 inches from the hole.

Schauffele acknowledged the need for improvement in his wedge game and discussed the adjustments he was making to address the issue. He explained that changes in his backswing had affected his wedge play negatively, leading to inconsistencies in his distances and accuracy. Despite these challenges, Schauffele recognized the success he had achieved in other aspects of his game, ranking highly in SG: Off the Tee, SG: Total, and SG: Putting. These strengths contributed to his 15 top 10 finishes and two major championship titles in the previous season.

As the second-ranked player in the world, Schauffele is currently chasing Scottie Scheffler, who holds the top spot. Scheffler’s exceptional ball-striking abilities, particularly in the 50 to 125-yard range, where he excels, have set him apart from his competitors. Schauffele acknowledged the areas where he could improve to narrow the gap between himself and Scheffler, focusing on his short game and approach shots. However, catching Scheffler will be a challenging task given the significant gap in the World Rankings between the two players.

Despite the competitive nature of professional golf, Schauffele emphasized his respect for Scheffler as both a player and a person. He praised Scheffler’s character and talent, acknowledging the challenge of trying to surpass him in the rankings. Schauffele explained that viewing Scheffler as a benchmark to strive towards was a motivating factor for him to push himself to reach new heights in his game. By setting Scheffler as the standard to beat, Schauffele aims to elevate his performance and achieve his goals in the 2025 season.

In conclusion, Xander Schauffele’s reflections on his 2024 performance and aspirations for the 2025 season highlight the competitive and introspective nature of professional golf. Despite facing challenges in his wedge play, Schauffele remains determined to improve and elevate his game to compete with the top-ranked players like Scottie Scheffler. As the season progresses, fans and fellow competitors will be watching closely to see how Schauffele’s hard work and dedication pay off on the course.
