The U.S. Open is set to take place at the historic Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina with a 156-player field competing for the championship. Entries closed on April 10, and more than 10,000 applicants applied, making it one of the highest application rates in USGA history. To qualify, players must have a Handicap Index of 0.4 or lower or be a professional. Pinehurst No. 2 has previously hosted the U.S. Open three times, with winners including Payne Stewart, Michael Campbell, and Martin Kaymer. The course has also been selected as the site for future U.S. Open championships in 2029, 2035, 2041, and 2047.

The field for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst includes 52 golfers who have earned full exemptions, with defending champion Wyndham Clark leading the list. The USGA outlined 23 fully exempt categories for this year’s tournament in February. The number of fully exempt players will increase with the inclusion of the top 60 point leaders from the Official World Golf Ranking as of May 20 and June 10. Winners of upcoming events, such as the PGA Championship, and achievements like multiple wins on the PGA Tour, will also earn exemptions. A new exemption category was created in 2023 for the college golfer who wins the NCAA individual championship in June.

The remaining spots in the U.S. Open field will be filled through local and final qualifying events. A total of 109 courses will host 18-hole local qualifiers across 44 states and Canada from April 22 to May 20. Those who advance from the local qualifiers will compete in one of 13 36-hole final qualifiers, with events taking place in the U.S., England, Canada, and Japan. Notable players who have previously advanced to the U.S. Open through qualifying events include Ken Venturi, Orville Moody, Gene Littler, and Lucas Glover.

Local qualifying events have taken place at various courses across the country, with players competing for a limited number of spots in the final qualifying events. Players have showcased their skills and determination to earn a chance to compete in the prestigious U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. The diversity of locations and courses for the qualifying events highlights the broad appeal and reach of the championship, welcoming aspiring amateur and professional golfers from different regions.

The U.S. Open final qualifying events will see top players from the local qualifiers vying for a spot in the main field at Pinehurst. The intense competition and pressure of the final qualifiers will determine the remaining players who will join the exempt competitors in the championship. The final qualifiers in various locations around the world provide a stage for underdog stories and unexpected victories as golfers aim to secure their place in one of the most prestigious golf tournaments in the world. The journey from local qualifiers to the final qualifying events is a testament to the resilience and skill of golfers pursuing their dreams of competing in the U.S. Open.

The U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 promises an exciting competition with a diverse field of top golfers from around the world. The rich history and tradition of the championship at Pinehurst add to the allure of the event, creating a unique and memorable experience for players and fans alike. As the tournament approaches, golf enthusiasts can look forward to witnessing the drama and excitement of the U.S. Open, where the best in the game will battle for the title on one of golf’s most iconic courses. With a mix of seasoned professionals and emerging talents, the 124th U.S. Open is shaping up to be a thrilling and memorable event in the world of golf.
