The 2024 Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin saw a challenging weekend for the golfers, with high winds and a four-hour delay causing the cut to not be made until Saturday. The third round extended into Sunday, leading to a quick finish at TPC Summerlin. Out of the 132 golfers who began their week in Vegas, 45 are scheduled to play in the upcoming 2024 Zozo Championship in Chiba, Japan.
Of the 45 players heading to Japan, 30 made the cut at the Shriners, securing a paycheck but also delaying their departure until Sunday night. Those lucky enough to have direct flights from Vegas to Chiba face a long 12-hour journey. With little time for rest, these players are focused on securing their spots in the top 125 to secure playing privileges for the next season.
Among the PGA Tour golfers who made the cut at the Shriners and will be heading to the Zozo Championship are well-known names such as Doug Ghim, Matt Kuchar, and Rickie Fowler. On the other hand, players like Charley Hoffman and Brendon Todd, who missed the cut at the Shriners, will also be competing in the Zozo. The field includes Joel Dahmen, who withdrew before the second round in Las Vegas.
The defending champion at the Zozo Championship is Collin Morikawa, with Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 champ, also in the field this year. Both Morikawa and Matsuyama did not participate in the Shriners event. The Zozo Championship is a no-cut event featuring a field of 78 players, providing an opportunity for golfers to showcase their skills over the course of the tournament.
The tight turnaround from the Shriners Children’s Open to the Zozo Championship presents a challenging schedule for the golfers, with little time for rest or recovery. However, the opportunity to compete in back-to-back tournaments allows players to gain valuable experience and potentially improve their rankings on the PGA Tour. As the race for the top 125 spots heats up, every tournament becomes crucial in determining players’ future on the tour.
