5 common mistakes in chip shots and how to improve them

Do you struggle with chunking chip shots around the greens? It can be frustrating and damaging to your scorecard and ego. Luckily, there are five common errors that can lead to chunking a chip shot. These errors include having a strong grip, tilting your shoulders like you’re setting up to hit a driver, swaying on or off the ball, swinging too far in-to-out, and unduly closing the face on the backswing. By addressing these errors, you can improve your chip shots and avoid chunking them in the future.

One simple fix for chunking chip shots is to adjust your grip. By taking a slightly weaker grip, you can prevent the lead edge of the club from digging in too early and causing a chunked shot. Additionally, setting up with even shoulders and keeping your nose in front of the ball throughout the swing can help prevent chunking. Avoid swaying on or off the ball and swinging too far in-to-out, as these can also lead to chunked chip shots.

To practice and improve your chipping technique, consider setting up a chunk-proofing chipping station. Using a wedge and placing an iron behind the ball pointing down your target line can help you maintain the correct swing path. Your goal is to allow the toe of the club to rise toward the sky on the backswing while keeping your swing just inside the club on the ground. By practicing this motion and focusing on going more up than around, you can improve your chipping consistency and avoid chunking your shots.

Ed Oldham, a GOLF Top 100 Teacher and director of instruction at the Ranch CC in Westminster, Colo., recommends using this training method to catch every chip crisp every time. By incorporating these tips and techniques into your practice routine, you can improve your chipping skills and avoid chunking chip shots in the future. Remember to address the common errors that lead to chunking, such as grip strength, shoulder tilt, swaying, swing path, and face angle. With practice and persistence, you can eliminate chunked chip shots from your game and improve your overall performance on the course.

Chipping is an essential skill in golf, especially when it comes to saving strokes around the greens. By focusing on proper technique and addressing common errors that lead to chunking, you can improve your chipping consistency and accuracy. Set up a chunk-proofing chipping station to practice maintaining the correct swing path and avoiding chunked shots. With guidance from top instructors like Ed Oldham, you can enhance your chipping skills and achieve better results on the course. Don’t let chunking chip shots hold you back from reaching your full potential as a golfer – implement these tips and practice diligently to see improvement in your game.
