Preparations for the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 are in full swing, and maintenance crews are working tirelessly to ensure that the course is in pristine condition for the championship. The famous Donald Ross design is known for its firm fairways and fast greens, and getting it tournament-ready requires a level of care and attention that goes above and beyond the usual year-round maintenance.

Superintendent John Jeffreys describes the U.S. Open as Pinehurst’s “Super Bowl,” emphasizing the importance of this event in terms of course preparation. The course was closed to resort play last month to allow Jeffreys and his team to focus on fine-tuning every aspect of the playing conditions. This included firming up fairways, speeding up greens, and ensuring the consistency of bunker sand, among other meticulous tasks.

GOLF.com had the opportunity to go behind the scenes at Pinehurst No. 2 as Jeffreys and assistant superintendent David Chrobak explained the ramped-up maintenance practices being implemented. From dawn to dusk, the cameras were rolling to capture the attention to detail and dedication of the maintenance team. Jeffreys and Chrobak even discussed the temporary relocation of the famous Payne Stewart statue in preparation for the championship.

As the championship approaches, the course at Pinehurst No. 2 undergoes a transformation to meet the standards of tournament golf. The emphasis on course conditions is paramount, with a focus on creating a challenging yet fair playing experience for the world’s best golfers. The firm fairways and speedy greens add an extra layer of difficulty to the already demanding layout designed by Donald Ross.

The U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 is not just a golf tournament; it’s a showcase of the dedication and expertise of the maintenance crews who work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that every blade of grass is perfect. The attention to detail in course preparation is what sets championship golf apart from everyday play, creating a stage where the best players in the world can compete at the highest level.

As golf fans eagerly anticipate the start of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, the focus shifts to the course conditions and the challenges that await the players. The combination of the historic layout and the meticulous preparation of the maintenance team sets the stage for an unforgettable championship. With the fairways firming up and the greens getting faster, the stage is set for a true test of skill and strategy at one of the most iconic golf courses in the world.
