Woodlake Country Club, located near Pinehurst, is currently allowing limited public play during the U.S. Open, making it an ideal time to explore the area. While tee times on the famous No. 2 course may be hard to come by, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy in the Pinehurst region. Ran Morrissett, GOLF Magazine’s architecture editor and a long-time resident of the area, shares his top 10 recommendations for eating, drinking, and relaxing in Pinehurst that will still leave you with enough time to catch some of the action at the U.S. Open.

One of Morrissett’s recommendations is Reservoir Park, a 165-acre green space with a lake at its center and a two-mile walking trail around it. This scenic park is the perfect spot for a leisurely stroll with stunning views and is open daily from dawn to dusk. For breakfast, Morrissett suggests visiting Betsy’s Crepes in downtown Southern Pines, a local favorite known for its fresh-made sweet and savory crepes, as well as soups, salads, and panini for lunch. The warm and welcoming atmosphere of Betsy’s Crepes, along with owner Betsy Markey’s personal touch, make it a must-visit spot.

Golf enthusiasts looking for swing tips should head to Hyland Golf Club in Southern Pines, where Doug Thompson, a knowledgeable instructor, offers valuable advice to players of all levels. Woodlake Country Club, home to a newly renovated Ellis Maples design, is another great option for a round of golf during U.S. Open week. The private club is open to outside play at a reasonable rate, with a special offer from Morrissett for golfers who score within four shots of their handicap. After a day on the course, unwind with a cocktail at Chapman’s Food & Spirits in Southern Pines and try the signature “Marytini” made by Mary herself.

When it comes to dining, Pinehurst offers a variety of options ranging from delicious hot dogs at Pine Needles and Southern Pines Golf Club to gourmet burgers at Ashten’s, Southern Prime Steakhouse, Chapman’s, and 195 Southern Fusion. For pizza lovers, Vito’s Ristorante & Pizzeria is a top choice, with a selection of Italian wines to complement the authentic Neapolitan-style pies. Those looking for al fresco dining can enjoy a meal at Ironwood Restaurant in downtown Pinehurst, which serves modern American cuisine on its patio.

For a relaxing picnic experience, Morrissett recommends gathering provisions from Southern Whey in Southern Pines and heading to Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve, where hiking trails wind through a sandy landscape. The region’s natural beauty and tranquility offer the perfect setting for a leisurely outdoor meal. To immerse yourself in Americana, take a stroll through downtown Southern Pines, which captures the charm of a bygone era. Visit the Ice Cream Parlor Restaurant for a scoop of nostalgia, enjoy a glass of wine at The Wine Cellar, and catch an indie film at the historic Sunrise Theater for a taste of small-town charm.
