The U.S. Open has a rich history at Pinehurst No. 2, with the tournament being held at this historic North Carolina venue four times. In this article, we take a look at the equipment used by the winners of the three previous U.S. Opens held at Pinehurst No. 2 – Payne Stewart in 1999, Michael Campbell in 2005, and Martin Kaymer in 2014.

Starting with Payne Stewart’s victory in 1999, he used a Titleist 975D Driver, Orlimar Tri-Metal 3-wood, Mizuno Pro MS-4 and Mizuno MP-14 irons, Cleveland 588 and Ping Zing 2 BeCu wedges, a SeeMore FGP Bronze putter, and a Titleist Tour Prestige 90 ball. These were the clubs that helped him secure his U.S. Open title at Pinehurst No. 2.

Moving on to Michael Campbell’s win in 2005, he had a Callaway FT-5 Driver, Callaway Steelhead 3-wood, Callaway Heavenwood Hybrid, Callaway X-Tour irons, Callaway Forged wedges, an Odyssey White Hot #6 putter, and a Callaway HX Tour ball. With this equipment, Campbell emerged victorious at Pinehurst No. 2.

Finally, we have Martin Kaymer’s triumph in 2014, where he used a TaylorMade SLDR 460 Driver, a TaylorMade SLDR 3-wood, TaylorMade Tour Preferred MC irons, TaylorMade TP xFT wedges, a Ping Karsten Anser 2 putter, and a TaylorMade Lethal ball. This winning combination of clubs helped Kaymer lift the trophy at the U.S. Open held at Pinehurst No. 2.

It is interesting to note the evolution of golf equipment over the years, with different winners using a variety of brands and technologies to achieve success at the U.S. Open. From Titleist to Callaway to TaylorMade, each player had a unique combination of clubs that worked for them on the challenging Pinehurst No. 2 course.

For golf enthusiasts looking to improve their game, studying the equipment choices of past champions can provide valuable insights. Understanding the clubs, shafts, and balls that worked well for Stewart, Campbell, and Kaymer can help players make informed decisions when selecting their own gear.

Whether it’s the precision of Mizuno irons, the forgiveness of Callaway woods, or the performance of TaylorMade drivers, each player had a specific setup that suited their game at Pinehurst No. 2. By analyzing their equipment choices, golfers can learn more about the importance of club selection and how it can impact their performance on the course.

As we look ahead to the upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, golf fans can reflect on the equipment used by past champions and appreciate the skill and strategy required to succeed in this prestigious tournament. From the classic designs of Payne Stewart’s clubs to the modern technology of Martin Kaymer’s gear, each player’s equipment played a crucial role in their U.S. Open victories at Pinehurst No. 2.
