Exciting Holes to Watch at Pinehurst No. 2 in the 2024 U.S. Open

The U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 presents players with challenging shots that require both mental and physical prowess. The decisions on how aggressive to play can make or break a contender’s chances, as the course is known for its fast, firm, and bouncy conditions with wiregrass plants and sandy waste areas lining the fairways. In this article, we will explore three key holes that test players in different ways, offering a great variation in possible outcomes.

One of the shortest par 4s at Pinehurst No. 2 is Hole No. 3, a 387-yard challenge that offers players multiple options off the tee. Players can choose to lay up short of the fairway bunker on the right, or take a riskier approach with a fairway wood or driver. The green tilts steeply from back to front, making approach shots challenging to control. This hole saw 114 birdies and one eagle in 2014, against 54 bogeys, 10 doubles, and two “others,” emphasizing the risk-reward nature of the play.

Hole No. 5, a 588-yard par 5, was the easiest hole in relation to par in 2014, with players capitalizing on the opportunity to score birdies and eagles. The tee shot is particularly interesting due to the severe slope of the fairway, which can lead to balls rolling into sandy waste areas. The approach shot features pinching bunkers and a narrow green, making it crucial for players to strategize their shots to avoid trouble. Winner Martin Kaymer played this hole in 4 under par in 2014, showcasing the range of scores possible here.

No. 13 is another short par 4 that tests players’ commitment off the tee. With bunkers on the right and sandy waste areas on both sides, players must decide how aggressive they want to be to set up their approach shot. The elevated green with a false front adds another layer of challenge to the hole, as any shot landing on the front third can roll back down the fairway. With multiple ways to tackle the demands of this hole, players can expect a wide variation in scoring.

Overall, Pinehurst No. 2 offers a unique set of challenges for players competing in the U.S. Open. The combination of difficult shots, strategic decision-making, and varying course conditions creates an environment where players must be at the top of their game to succeed. As the tournament unfolds, we can expect to see exciting and unpredictable outcomes on these key holes that will play a significant role in determining the eventual champion.
