Recap of the 2024 US Open

Bryson DeChambeau emerged as the champion of the 2024 US Open, held at Pinehurst, North Carolina. The tournament was marked by challenging conditions, particularly the tabletop greens that caused balls to run off putting surfaces. Prior to the final round, players like Wyndham Clark expressed concerns about the course conditions, with the grounds crew even having to water the greens before the start of the tournament. Despite these efforts, players still struggled with the tricky greens, with many hitting greens only to see their balls roll off into waste areas or back onto the fairway.

Scottie Scheffler, the world number one and a favorite to win the tournament, had a tough time navigating the difficult greens. He posted an over par first round followed by a second round without a single birdie, finishing just outside the top 40. Other notable players, including Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Jason Day, Viktor Hovland, and Max Homa, also missed the cut, adding to the unpredictability of the tournament.

Despite the challenging conditions, the final round saw some dramatic moments as Bryson DeChambeau held off a surge from Rory McIlroy to secure the win. McIlroy briefly took the lead with a series of birdies but faltered with bogeys on the back nine, ultimately missing a crucial putt on the 72nd hole. DeChambeau’s steady play, including a clutch bunker shot on the final hole, secured him his second major championship and US Open victory.

In his post-round interview, DeChambeau dedicated his win to his late father on Father’s Day and cited Payne Stewart, his golf idol and fellow Pinehurst major winner, as an inspiration for his victory. The tournament marked a fitting end to Father’s Day at the US Open. With his win, DeChambeau solidified his status as a top contender on the PGA Tour and added another major title to his resume.

Looking ahead, the tour moves to Connecticut for the Travelers Championship where Keegan Bradley is the defending champion. DeChambeau’s equipment setup for the tournament included a Krank Formula Fire Pro driver, Avoda Prototype irons, Ping Glide 4.0 wedges, and a SIK Pro C-Series Armlock putter, showcasing his precision and skill on the course. As a passionate golfer who competes in state and national amateur events, DeChambeau’s win at the US Open is a testament to his dedication to the game and his relentless pursuit of improvement.
