Scotland’s Connor Graham showed skill and poise to secure the top spot in the 129th Amateur Championship held at Ballyliffin in Ireland. The 17-year-old golfer from Blairgowrie maintained his lead with a one-under-par 71 on the Glashedy Links, finishing with a seven-under-par total of 136, three strokes ahead of Norway’s Michael Alexander Mjaaseth. Ben van Wyk of South Africa also impressed, finishing in third place with a score of three-under-par after battling tough conditions. Graham, a former winner of The R&A Junior Open, is looking to follow in the footsteps of past champions by winning both the qualifier and the title.

Despite challenging weather conditions, Graham remained composed and finished strong with birdies on the 15th and 17th holes to go under-par. Mjaaseth briefly took the lead with three birdies on the front nine but faltered with a bogey and a double-bogey, ultimately securing his spot in the match play stage with a score of four-under. Van Wyk’s day started with a bogey but was highlighted by an eagle on the 6th and birdies on the 17th and 18th holes. English teenager Oscar Lent also showed his skills with a birdie and a long eagle putt to finish with a two-under total.

The cut-off for the top 64 players and ties fell at three-over-par, leading to a sudden death playoff for 18 spots in the match play stage. Notable players who advanced include Richard Teder, Jack Bigham, and Sebastian Cave, while top players like Christiaan Maas, Matthew McClean, and Liam Nolan missed out. The competition was intense, with Spain’s Jose Luis Ballester Bario securing his spot with a strong finish. The level of play at the championship was impressive, showcasing the talent and determination of the young golfers.

The match play phase of the tournament promises to be exciting, with top qualifiers like Graham, Mjaaseth, van Wyk, and Lent looking to continue their strong performances. The historic championship has seen past winners go on to have successful golf careers, and the current crop of players is eager to add their names to the list of champions. The competition at Ballyliffin tested the golfers’ skills and mental fortitude, setting the stage for a thrilling finale.

Graham’s success in the stroke play phase has put him in a prime position to make a run at the title. His experience and talent, combined with his consistency and resilience in challenging conditions, make him a formidable contender. As the championship moves into the match play stage, all eyes will be on Graham and the other top qualifiers as they battle for ultimate glory. The Amateur Championship at Ballyliffin has already provided plenty of excitement and drama, and the upcoming matches promise even more thrilling moments on the course.
