Cameron Young dominates TPC River Highlands with a record-breaking 59

Cameron Young’s historic performance at the Travelers Championship made waves in the golf world as he became the second player to break 60 at TPC River Highlands. The tournament was already shaping up to be a shootout, with the previous year’s record of 23 under in jeopardy after 36 holes. Young’s round of 11-under 59 tied Tom Kim’s 36-hole lead before the leaders even teed off for their third round. Despite hitting just six fairways, Young’s masterful performance included seven birdies and two eagles to secure his spot in history.

Young’s round of 59 marked the 13th time a player has scored 60 or better on the PGA Tour, with the last occurrence being four years ago by Scottie Scheffler. However, Young’s round did not break the TPC River Highlands course record, as Jim Furyk still owns that distinction after his 12-under 58 in 2016. Starting the day tied for 43rd, Young’s stellar play catapulted him into contention and earned him a place in the record books.

The trend of low scores in professional golf continued with Young’s round, following notable performances by golfers like Bryson DeChambeau, Joaquin Niemann, Cristobal Del Solar, and Aldrich Potgieter. Young became the seventh player to shoot sub-60 on a global tour in 2024, joining a select group of elite golfers who have achieved this feat. Additionally, other PGA Tour players like Nick Dunlap, Wyndham Clark, and Nick Taylor have also shot rounds of 60 this season, with each ultimately winning their respective events.

TPC River Highlands has seen its fair share of low scores, with players like Denny McCarthy, Rickie Fowler, and Keegan Bradley taking advantage of the course’s birdie-friendly layout. The venue now joins the Greenbrier’s Old White TPC course as the only PGA Tour hosts to yield multiple sub-60 rounds. Conditions at the Travelers Championship, including lift, clean, and place rules, contributed to players’ success, with Young capitalizing on the favorable setup to make history.

As the golf world continues to witness remarkable performances and record-breaking rounds, players like Cameron Young showcase the skill and precision required to excel at the highest level. Young’s 59 at TPC River Highlands will be remembered as a standout moment in a season already filled with exceptional golf. With the bar set high by these low scores, fans can expect even more excitement and drama as the season unfolds. Young’s journey towards his first PGA Tour win is undoubtedly one to watch, as he continues to make his mark on the sport.
