5-year-old irons continue to dominate on the PGA Tour

The Titleist 620CB irons have continued to maintain a strong presence on the PGA Tour five years after their initial release. These irons are a favorite among tour players due to their accuracy and distance control, which are crucial factors in their performance. Many pros prefer to hold onto their trusted irons for extended periods to avoid having to reconfigure their golf bags for distance gapping. The recent win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic by Cam Davis with the Titleist 620CB irons further solidifies their reputation as a top-performing club on the tour.

One notable player who has had success with the Titleist 620CB irons is Wyndham Clark, the 2023 U.S. Open winner, who praised the irons for their perfect fit and performance. Another player, Brian Harman, used the Titleist 620CB irons to win the Open Championship at Royal Liverpool in 2021. The consistent success of these irons on the tour highlights their performance capabilities and appeal to professional golfers.

The Titleist 620CB irons were initially released to the public in August 2019, marking a departure from Titleist’s traditional two-year cycle for iron models. Despite updates to the T-Series since then, the 620CB and MB irons have remained the same, showcasing their enduring popularity among golfers. Aimed at low-mid handicappers, the Titleist 620CB irons feature a classic cavity-back design with co-forged tungsten in the long irons for stability and forgiveness.

Titleist has worked closely with PGA Tour players like Justin Thomas, Webb Simpson, and Cam Young to develop custom iron options that cater to their preferences. While recreational golfers may not have access to this level of customization, it demonstrates Titleist’s commitment to improving iron performance based on player feedback and data. The brand’s continued innovation in iron design may lead to more customizable options for golfers in the future, similar to their Vokey wedges.

Another iron option that has maintained its popularity over a similar time period is the TaylorMade P7TW irons developed for Tiger Woods. Although Tiger may not be playing full-time currently, players like Scottie Scheffler and Tommy Fleetwood still use the P7TW irons. This durability in popularity suggests that unless a golfer’s swing dynamics change significantly, there may not be a need to switch irons frequently. However, changes in ball flight or distance loss could indicate the need for a fitting to optimize iron performance.

In conclusion, the continued success of the Titleist 620CB irons on the PGA Tour highlights their performance capabilities and appeal to professional golfers. With features designed to enhance accuracy and consistency, these irons have become a trusted choice among tour players. The customization options offered by Titleist reflect the brand’s commitment to improving iron performance and delivering options tailored to individual preferences. As golfers consider their equipment choices for 2024, the enduring popularity of models like the Titleist 620CB and TaylorMade P7TW irons suggests that finding the right fit can lead to long-term success on the course.
