Lessons Learned from Tommy Fleetwood’s Time as a Caddy

Tommy Fleetwood, a 33-year-old English golfer, has been performing well in 2024, finishing 26th or better in eight of his last nine PGA Tour starts, including a career-best T3 at the Masters. In addition to his success on the course, Fleetwood has also taken on the role of caddie for his stepson, 17-year-old Oscar Craig. Craig’s entry to the Challenge Tour’s UAE Challenge in Abu Dhabi saw Fleetwood donning a caddie bib, showcasing his support for his stepson’s budding golfing abilities.

During the tournament, Craig shot well, making the cut as the only amateur in the field to do so. Fleetwood, now in a caddie role, reflected on the experience, noting the clarity and perspective he gained from observing the game from a different angle. He mentioned the importance of self-talk and how he would like to adopt the positive language he used while caddying for his stepson for himself.

Fleetwood’s regular caddie, Ian Finnis, has been absent from his side due to a serious health scare, requiring open-heart surgery and an extensive recovery process. After being sidelined for months, Finnis made a return to caddie for Fleetwood during a recent tournament, with Fleetwood expressing his joy at having his right-hand man back on the bag. The duo’s distinctive size difference and popularity amongst fans and players make them a recognizable pair on the Tour.

Fleetwood spoke highly of Finnis’s return, highlighting the seamless flow and decision-making they shared during the tournament round. This reunion signifies a new chapter in their partnership, with Fleetwood looking forward to the discussions and insights they will continue to share on the course. As Fleetwood balances his dual roles as a professional golfer and a supportive stepfather/caddie, he embraces the challenges and rewards that come with both positions.

The unique dynamic between Fleetwood and Craig showcases the bond between stepfather and stepson, as they navigate the complexities of the golfing world together. Fleetwood’s versatility and adaptability shine through in his multiple roles, demonstrating his commitment to both his family and his professional career. As Fleetwood continues to excel on the course and support his stepson’s golfing journey, he sets an example of dedication and perseverance for aspiring golfers and parents alike.
