The KPMG PGA Championship was the last event where LPGA pros could earn qualifying points for the Olympics, impacting the standings significantly. Miyu Yamashita’s final round performance pushed her rankings ahead of Ayaka Furue, making her an Olympics alternate. Furue had a solid week finishing T19, just fractions of a point behind Yamashita in the world ranking and Olympics qualifying. The Evian Championship is now the focus for Furue and other top LPGA players with a chance to earn world ranking points and major wins.

Ayaka Furue, determined to bounce back from missing out on the Olympics, started her week at the Evian Resort with an impressive opening round of 65, followed by another stellar performance on Friday with no dropped shots. Despite rain-soaked conditions, Furue maintained her lead through 36 holes, the only player to play bogey-free. Her consistency and focus on the course have been key to her success so far in the tournament, with expectations of continued strong play as the weather improves.

A victory at the Evian Championship would not only be a significant achievement for Furue but also signal the end of a challenging year. With a busy tournament schedule and numerous top 10 finishes, Furue has been on the cusp of breaking through, notably at the ShopRite LPGA Classic last month. Currently ranked third in the season-long Race to the CME Globe, Furue is the highest-ranked player without a win in the chase. Her strategy moving forward is to maintain focus on her game and aim to get closer to the pins with each shot.

The competition at the Evian Championship features some of the best players in the world, with opportunities for players like Lydia Ko and Nelly Korda to make significant impacts on their seasons. Furue, at 24 years old, is seeking retribution and redemption for missing out on the Olympics, aiming to continue her strong performance at the major event. The upcoming rounds at the Evian Resort will be crucial for Furue as she looks to secure her place among the top contenders and potential major winners on the LPGA tour.

With the course expected to dry out as the rain subsides, players will face new challenges in the upcoming rounds. Furue’s ability to adapt to changing conditions and maintain her focus will be key in determining her success at the Evian Championship. As one of the few players to play bogey-free through the first two rounds, Furue has shown her resilience and determination to perform at a high level on the international stage. As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Furue and her quest for victory and redemption after missing out on the Olympics.
