The 152nd Open at Royal Troon will see the winner take home a record-breaking prize of USD 3.1 million, making it the highest amount in the tournament’s history. The prestigious event, which will take place from 14-21 July 2024, will have a total prize fund of USD 17 million, with a USD 500,000 increase from the previous year. The R&A, who organizes The Open, aims to strike a balance between maintaining the tournament’s global status, funding governance, and supporting amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries worldwide.

Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, highlighted the organization’s responsibility to make choices that support the growth of participation in golf, ensuring the sport’s future success. While acknowledging the impact of substantial prize money increases in men’s professional golf, Slumbers emphasized the need to consider the long-term financial sustainability of the sport. The R&A is committed to acting in the best interests of the global game, with a focus on ensuring golf’s thriving future in the next 50 years.

The prize money breakdown for The Open includes significant amounts for the top finishers, with the winner receiving USD 3.1 million and the runner-up earning USD 1.759 million. The prize money decreases gradually for lower finishing positions, with the 70th place taking home USD 38,900. Only professional golfers are eligible to receive prize money, and additional funds will be added if more than 70 professionals qualify for the final two rounds.

For non-qualifying professional golfers after two rounds, there are specific amounts allocated based on their performance. The leading 10 professional golfers and ties will receive USD 12,350, the next 20 professionals will get USD 10,300, and the remainder of professionals will receive USD 8,750. The prize money allocation ensures that all professional golfers who participate in The Open have the opportunity to earn a share of the total fund, supporting their careers and furthering the growth of the sport.

The increase in prize money for The Open reflects the ongoing success and popularity of golf as a global sport. By offering record-breaking amounts to winners and ensuring that all professional golfers have the opportunity to earn from the prize fund, The R&A is supporting the development and sustainability of golf for years to come. As the tournament returns to Royal Troon for the tenth time, the excitement and anticipation surrounding The Open continue to grow, attracting top players and fans from around the world.
