Playing golf in windy conditions can be a challenge for every golfer, but with a few simple setup tweaks, you can overcome the conditions and improve your game. As the Open Championship approaches and players prepare to face the windy and blustery conditions at Royal Troon, it’s important to understand how different weather conditions can impact your shots, especially off the tee. In this article, GOLF Top 100 Teacher Carol Preisinger shares her tips for preparing for golf in Scotland and mastering shots in upwind and downwind situations.

When faced with a windy day on the golf course, it’s essential to make adjustments to your setup in order to have more success with your shots. Instead of relying on your driver’s high ball-flight and low spin, consider making three simple tweaks at setup to give yourself a better chance of hitting quality shots in windy conditions. By teeing the ball lower, adjusting the ball position slightly forward, and keeping the backswing short of parallel, you can achieve a lower ball-flight that stays beneath the wind and maximizes your distance.

One of the key adjustments to make when playing golf in the wind is to tee the ball lower so that the entire ball is on the clubface, promoting a lower trajectory. Additionally, adjusting the ball position slightly forward of center can encourage a more level swing arc through impact, while keeping the backswing short of parallel by limiting wrist hinge helps deloft the golf club and keep the ball flight low. These simple setup tweaks can help you lower your ball-flight, avoid the impact of the wind on your shots, and improve your overall distance on windy days.

Mastering upwind and downwind shots requires a different approach and strategy than playing in calm weather conditions. Understanding how to adjust your setup and swing to accommodate the wind can make a significant difference in your overall performance on the course. By making these adjustments, you can improve your ball-flight control, increase your distance, and ultimately shave strokes off your score.

As you prepare for a round of golf in windy conditions, consider the advice of top instructors like Carol Preisinger, who emphasize the importance of making simple setup tweaks to overcome the challenges of playing in the wind. By implementing these adjustments and understanding how weather conditions affect your shots, you can adapt your game to perform better in challenging conditions. With the right approach and strategy, you can turn windy days on the golf course into opportunities to improve your skills and elevate your game.
