Oklahoma’s Municipal Golf Course to Undergo $2.2 Million Renovation, including Replacement of All 18 Greens

Adams Municipal Golf Course in Bartlesville, Oklahoma is undergoing its largest financial investment since its establishment in 1963, with a leadership transition and a multi-million dollar greens rebuild project on the horizon. The original cost of the course back in 1963 was $317,000, which amounts to approximately $3.3 million in today’s money. The course was entirely funded by private donations at that time, but this time around, less than a quarter of the new project is funded by donations, with the rest coming from taxpayer dollars.

Jerry Benedict, who has served as the Adams Golf Pro for 38 years, is set to retire in August, leading to the appointment of Class A PGA Professional Jason Dochney as the interim director. Dochney, who currently serves as the teaching professional at Adams Golf Course, has been praised for his contributions since joining earlier this year. The city officials believe that this appointment will ensure a seamless transition and maintain continuity in golf course operations following Benedict’s retirement.

The retirement of Jerry Benedict also means that the city will take over the operations of his business, as per their contractual obligations. The city has budgeted $655,700 for the Adam’s Golf Course Pro Shop, which includes funds for Benedict’s salary, ownership transition, and other expenses. This is a significant increase from the previous year, indicating the scale of the transition process. The city staff estimates that Benedict’s buyout could make up a substantial portion of the money earmarked for the transition.

In July, the City Council approved a $15,000 contract with JJ Keegan to conduct a strategic review of the Adams Golf Course management model. This consultant will evaluate current operations and compare them to modern trends to determine the best way forward. Additionally, a $2.2 million greens rebuild project is in the works, which will involve replacing all 18 greens on the course. The project is funded by the 2018, 2020, and 2023 General Obligation Bond Elections, as well as private donations.

The greens rebuild project is targeted for completion by mid-2025, with construction tentatively set to begin in January 2025. Preparatory work for the project has been ongoing, including tree removal to control erosion and promote grass growth. Beyond the greens rebuild, other upgrades to the course include a new roof and covered patio over the north end of the clubhouse, with the budget increasing due to rising material costs.

Currently, the city only receives revenue from greens fees, locker rentals, and memberships, while the golf pro retains revenue from range balls, cart rentals, and retail sales. The city covers salaries, maintenance costs, and utilities, with operational deficits subsidized by the general fund. Despite operating at a loss, the Adams Golf Course is seen as an important asset to the community, attracting visitors and contributing to economic development.

Laura Sanders, Assistant City Manager, emphasized the value of Adams Golf Course to Bartlesville residents, highlighting its role in providing services, attracting visitors, and raising funds for community assistance. While the golf course may require general fund transfers to cover operational deficits, Sanders believes that it enhances the quality of life for residents and contributes to economic growth. Adams Golf Course remains a significant entity in the Bartlesville community, with ongoing investments and leadership changes geared towards its sustained success in the future.
