3 Key Practices You Should Be Implementing on the Driving Range

To have a more productive practice session on the driving range, there are a few key things you can do to maximize your time and improve your skills. GOLF Top 100 Teacher Jason Birnbaum shares three ways to efficiently improve your game during a range session. The first tip is to build a better driving-range routine by mimicking on-course play as much as possible. This includes separating your practice into block practice, where you repeat the same skill under the same conditions, and random practice, where you practice multiple skills in a random order with different variables. By incorporating both types of practice, you can better prepare for a variety of scenarios on the course.

Another key tip from Birnbaum is to focus on hitting wedge shots during your range session. Wedge swings at slower speeds with more forgiveness can help build confidence, ensure a solid range session, and improve your overall game. Tour pros often practice with wedges regularly, so it’s a strategy that more amateurs should adopt to improve their timing and rhythm with every club in their bag. Additionally, it’s important to always have a plan when you go to the driving range. Having a set schedule for your range sessions can help you stay accountable, track your progress, and build confidence in your abilities.

When planning your range session, consider allocating time for warming up and getting loose, block and random practice with a 7 or 8-iron, hitting drivers and woods, practicing distance wedges, and working on your putting. By having a structured plan for your range sessions, you will feel a greater sense of accomplishment and make the most of your practice time. Implementing these tips and strategies during your next driving range visit can lead to a more productive and effective practice session, ultimately helping you improve your golf game and lower your scores on the course.

In summary, for a successful driving range visit, focus on mimicking on-course play, incorporating both block and random practice, hitting wedge shots to build confidence, and having a structured plan for your range sessions. By following these tips from GOLF Top 100 Teacher Jason Birnbaum, you can make the most of your practice time and see improvements in your overall game. With a targeted approach to your range sessions, you can develop key skills, improve your timing and rhythm, and build confidence in your abilities on the golf course. Start implementing these strategies during your next range visit for a more productive practice session and better results on the course.
