Two Golfers from Indiana Discover Game-Changing Solution

Clay Merchent, a golfer from Noblesville, Indiana, underwent a challenging journey back to the game after left rib surgery sidelined him for nearly two years. Despite his accolades as a Drive, Chip and Putt National Finalist and Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2021, Clay’s nagging injury eventually became debilitating, affecting his ability to play college golf. It wasn’t until he met thoracic surgeon Dr. Adam Hansen, a specialist in Slipping Rib Syndrome, that he received a proper diagnosis and underwent successful surgery to repair his ribs.

Ethan Chelf, Clay’s teammate at Indiana University, had experienced a similar struggle with back pain that also led to a diagnosis of Slipping Rib Syndrome. Like Clay, Ethan underwent surgery with Dr. Hansen to treat the condition, leading to a breakthrough in their recovery. Both men are now preparing to return to college golf with a newfound appreciation for the game and a deeper understanding of their bodies.

Slipping Rib Syndrome is a difficult condition to diagnose, as it often causes pain in areas of the body that are not directly related to the ribs. Dr. Hansen has developed a specialized treatment technique that has been successful in over 700 cases, providing relief to athletes like Clay and Ethan who rely on asymmetric movements in their sports.

The recovery process for Clay and Ethan has been gradual, with limitations on physical activity and a slow return to the golf course. Despite setbacks and challenges along the way, both men remain hopeful for their futures in professional golf, knowing that their shared experience has brought them closer together as roommates and teammates.

The journey back to competitive golf has been a humbling experience for Clay and Ethan, who have learned to appreciate the freedom and joy of the game after facing significant obstacles. Their story serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination required to overcome injury and return to the sport they love. As they look ahead to the upcoming college golf season, Clay and Ethan are grateful for the opportunity to continue pursuing their passion for golf with renewed strength and persistence.
