Announcement of 2024 Presidents Cup Teams

The prestigious Presidents Cup, a biennial event that pits a team of American golfers against a team of international players, is set to take place this year at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada from September 27-29. The teams have been announced, with Team USA being captained by Jim Furyk and the International Team led by Canadian Mike Weir. Both teams consist of six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s picks.

Team USA’s six automatic qualifiers were Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Patrick Cantlay, and Sahith Theegala. Furyk then selected the next six highest points scorers to complete the team, including Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Brian Harman, and Max Homa. On the other hand, Weir’s International Team comprises Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Adam Scott, Tom Kim, Jason Day, Byeong Hun An, along with captain’s picks Corey Conners, Min Woo Lee, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Taylor Pendrith, Si Woo Kim, and Mackenzie Hughes.

One notable inclusion in Team USA is Keegan Bradley, who had been serving as one of Furyk’s vice captains but secured his spot on the team after winning the BMW Championship. Furyk expressed his confidence in Bradley’s competitive spirit and his ability to contribute to the team. However, players contracted to LIV Golf, such as Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, are not eligible for selection for either team, which means talented individuals like Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann were also unable to compete in the Presidents Cup.

Team USA has been dominating the Presidents Cup in recent years, seeking their tenth consecutive victory this year. They most recently defeated the International Team 17.5-12.5 at Quail Hollow in 2022. On the other hand, the International Team is aiming to end a long losing streak, having suffered nine consecutive defeats against the Americans. Despite this, their recent performances at ‘home’ events, including a narrow 16-14 loss at Royal Melbourne in 2019 and a 15½-14½ loss in South Korea in 2015, show promise for a potential upset.

With the event being a PGA Tour-sanctioned competition, players affiliated with LIV Golf are ineligible for selection, impacting the lineup for both teams. Weir’s strategy of including three Canadians on the International Team, including Conners, Pendrith, and Hughes, demonstrates the advantage of playing on their home turf. It remains to be seen how these selections will affect the overall performance of the International Team and if it will help them secure their third victory in the history of the Presidents Cup.

As the Presidents Cup approaches, golf fans are eagerly anticipating the action-packed tournament that will showcase some of the best players in the world. With Team USA looking to continue their winning streak and the International Team hungry for a breakthrough victory, the competition promises to be intense and exciting. Stay tuned for updates on the Presidents Cup as the teams prepare to battle it out on the iconic Royal Montreal Golf Club in Canada.
