The Solheim Cup is one of the most prestigious golf events in women’s golf, showcasing the best female golfers from the United States and Europe. With such high stakes and intense competition, it’s no surprise that over the years, there have been several controversial moments that have captured the attention of fans and players alike. From incorrect rulings to contentious concessions, the Solheim Cup has seen its fair share of drama. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most controversial moments in Solheim Cup history and how they have shaped the event.

One of the most memorable controversies in Solheim Cup history occurred in 2015, when Alison Lee and Brittany Lincicome faced off against Suzann Pettersen and Charley Hull in a four-ball match. Lee missed a birdie putt on the 17th hole and picked it up, thinking it was conceded by the European team. However, Pettersen and Hull informed the rules official that they did not concede the putt, resulting in a lost hole for Lee and Lincicome. This controversial incident led to a heated debate and eventually sparked the biggest comeback in Solheim Cup history, with the American team rallying to win the Cup.

Another controversial moment took place in the 2013 Solheim Cup, when Stacy Lewis and Lexi Thompson were involved in a botched ruling that favored the European team. After Carlota Ciganda hit her second shot into the water on the par-5 15th hole, a lengthy delay ensued, and an incorrect ruling allowed her to drop about 40 yards behind the point of entry. This ruling ultimately led to a victory for the European team, much to the frustration of the American duo.

In 2021, at the Inverness Club, a controversial ruling involving the 10-second rule occurred during a match between Nelly Korda and Madelene Sagstrom. Sagstrom conceded a birdie putt to Korda but didn’t allow the ball the allotted 10 seconds to potentially fall into the hole for an eagle. This violation led to a rule infraction and ultimately influenced the outcome of the match.

During the 2007 Solheim Cup, a hot mic incident involving Dottie Pepper sparked controversy when she made disparaging remarks about American players Laura Diaz and Sherri Steinhauer during a live broadcast. Pepper later apologized for her comments and went on to serve as an assistant captain for the Solheim Cup team.

In the 2000 Solheim Cup in Scotland, Annika Sorenstam found herself in a controversial situation when she mistakenly played out of turn and thought she had chipped in for birdie. This error led to a replay of the shot and ultimately affected the outcome of the match.

The 2003 Solheim Cup saw a series of contentious concessions, as several matches were abruptly ended once Europe reached the required 14.5 points to win the Cup. This unexpected turn of events led to confusion and chaos among players and captains, as the remaining matches were conceded without being played out.

These controversial moments in Solheim Cup history have added an extra layer of drama and excitement to an already thrilling event. While some instances have led to heated debates and disputes, they have also showcased the passion and intensity that players bring to the competition. As golf fans eagerly await the next edition of the Solheim Cup, they can expect more thrilling moments and potential controversies that will continue to shape the legacy of this prestigious event.
