Tony Finau discloses Brooks Koepka’s act of selflessness during Ryder Cup

In the opening match of the 2018 Ryder Cup, Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka were paired together. Koepka, known for thriving in big-time moments, has won five major championships since 2017, making him one of the most prolific players in golf’s biggest events. He also has a winning record in his four Ryder Cup appearances, with a 7-6-2 record and no losses in singles matches. Despite these credentials, Koepka gave up the honor of hitting the opening tee shot in the away Ryder Cup match to Finau, as revealed in a recent YouTube video.

Finau, in his first Ryder Cup as a captain’s pick, was initially hesitant to take the honor from his playing partner. However, Koepka insisted that Finau hit the first tee shot, leading off not only their match but the entire event. The pressure was high as Finau prepared to tee off, with 10,000 spectators including famous athletes such as Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps watching. Despite the pressure, Finau rose to the occasion and hit a successful shot down the middle, setting the tone for the match.

The 2018 Ryder Cup was also notable for including Tiger Woods, who had recently ended a five-year winless drought at the Tour Championship prior to the event. Woods had some tough love for Finau, jokingly telling him not to mess up the opening shot. Finau and Koepka went on to win their opening match against Justin Rose and Jon Rahm, but the Europeans swept the afternoon session and ultimately won the Cup. Despite the loss, Finau held the memory of hitting the opening tee shot as an example of his close bond with Koepka.

Finau reflected on the experience, expressing gratitude for Koepka’s gesture and acknowledging their strong friendship. He noted that Koepka will always be a “homie” for giving him the honor of hitting the opening tee shot. The moment showcased the camaraderie between the two players, who also have wives that are good friends.
