Lynch: U.S. golf fans skip meals in Q4, prompting PGA Tour to consider expanding internationally

The PGA Tour has long been content with its insular approach, but the current landscape of golf demands a broader perspective. The U.S. audience remains the most monetizable, but interest in golf wanes during the Fall season. With the PGA Tour playoffs concluded and other tours delivering lackluster performances, it is clear that a change is needed to reinvigorate the sport.

The key to expanding the reach of golf lies in reimagining the fourth quarter of the season. By aligning the conclusion of the FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai, the U.S. and European circuits can collaborate on a global product that appeals to fans worldwide. Markets in Europe, the Middle East, Korea, Japan, South Africa, and Australia offer opportunities for growth, with a series of six to eight tournaments providing a more compelling menu for fans.

However, the challenges of funding and player participation loom large. Media rights and sponsorship outside the U.S. market are limited, and attracting top golfers to travel overseas late in the year presents a hurdle. The SSG investors may need to consider alternate sources of funding, such as a partnership with Riyadh, which could introduce a tournament in Saudi Arabia. It is crucial to secure the participation of key players to elevate the profile of events, even if not every star is needed at every tournament.

While these changes may not come to fruition in 2025, the need for innovation in the golf industry is undeniable. The current gaps in the schedule present an opportunity for the sport to evolve and deliver more value to fans worldwide. By balancing the interests of the strong U.S. market with a global expansion strategy, golf can position itself for growth and success in the future.

In the words of Peter Ackroyd, “sometimes the silences, the gaps, tell us more than anything else.” The silence in the current golf calendar should serve as a wake-up call for those in charge of the sport to embrace change and drive progress. With a long-term vision and a commitment to collaboration, golf can break free from its insular traditions and reach new heights on the global stage.
