The Oklahoma Sooners have kicked off the fall season in stellar fashion, securing their second victory in eight days in the state of Texas. The team claimed the top spot in the 2024 Ben Hogan Collegiate at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, besting rival Texas by four shots. Senior Drew Goodman led the charge with a T-3 finish at 5 under, supported by strong performances from sophomore Ryder Cowan and Matthew Troutman. The Sooners were the only team to shoot in the 270s all three rounds, finishing at 10 under and establishing their dominance.

Defending national champion Auburn landed in third place at 4 under, trailing behind Texas. North Carolina and Arizona State rounded out the top five, with North Carolina’s David Ford clinching the individual win by shooting 9 under, three shots ahead of Auburn’s Brendan Valdes. Despite strong showings from some players, such as Billy Davis of Auburn and Daniel Bennett of Texas, others like Jackson Koivun of Auburn and Gordon Sargent of Vanderbilt struggled to perform at their best.

Auburn’s Koivun, the reigning Haskins Award winner, finished outside the top 20 for the second consecutive event, a rare occurrence in his career. Vanderbilt’s Sargent, who has already secured his PGA Tour card for next year, continued his inconsistent performance this fall, placing T-40 in the Ben Hogan Collegiate. Both players will aim to bounce back and regain their form as the season progresses.

The competitive landscape of collegiate golf was on full display at the Ben Hogan Collegiate, with teams showcasing their skills at a prestigious venue like Colonial Country Club. Oklahoma’s back-to-back victories in Texas have cemented their status as a team to watch this season, with talented players like Goodman and Cowan leading the charge. The Sooners’ ability to consistently shoot sub-280 scores sets them apart from their competitors and positions them as strong contenders for future events.

As the fall season continues, teams like Auburn and Texas will look to close the gap on Oklahoma and secure wins of their own. Individual players, including those who have struggled in recent events, will aim to rebound and make a statement in upcoming tournaments. The diverse field of competitors in collegiate golf ensures that every event is exciting and unpredictable, with new stars emerging and established players facing challenges.

Overall, the 2024 Ben Hogan Collegiate provided a platform for top collegiate golf programs and players to showcase their talent and compete at a high level. The success of teams like Oklahoma highlights the depth and strength of college golf in the United States, while individual performances like Ford’s victory underscore the skill and potential of young golfers. As the season progresses, fans can expect more intense competition, thrilling moments, and standout performances from the stars of collegiate golf.
