Deciding Between 2024 TaylorMade P·770 and 2023 P·790 Irons: Which One is Best for You?

TaylorMade has recently released an updated player distance iron, the P·770, for 2024, which follows the success of its predecessor, the P·790. While these two clubs may appear similar, they each cater to different types of golfers, and understanding the nuances of each can help players make an informed decision on which set is the best fit for them.

The P·770 irons feature a hollow body construction with inner chambers filled with SpeedFoam Air, providing a lighter feel while maintaining a solid, forged feel. The L-shaped faces are forged using stainless steel and wrap under the leading edge and into the sole to broaden the sweet spot. The inclusion of tungsten weights in the heel and toe, along with a Speed Pocket slot behind the leading edge, enhances stability and optimizes launch angles for improved distance control.

On the other hand, the P·790 irons also feature a hollow body construction with inner chambers filled with SpeedFoam Air, contributing to a softer feel and improved sound. These irons have a progressive center of gravity for high launch in long irons and better control in short irons, as well as a Thru-Slot Speed Pocket for enhanced ball speed on low face strikes in the 4- through 7-iron.

The P·770 irons are designed for better-player distance, appealing to golfers seeking a blend of control and forgiveness. These irons are ideal for low to mid-handicap players who want a compact look at address with some forgiveness on off-center hits. The shorter blade length, thinner top line, and less offset make the P·770 a solid choice for players looking to shape shots and optimize launch conditions.

Conversely, the P·790 irons cater to a broader range of golfers, offering more forgiveness than the P·770 due to their larger size. These irons are designed for mid- to high-handicappers looking for distance, forgiveness, and a higher ball flight. With a bit more offset and a thicker top line, the P·790 instills confidence in less consistent ball strikers while providing the necessary forgiveness for players seeking improved performance.

Ultimately, the best way to determine the right set of irons for your game is to work with a custom fitter who can assess your launch conditions and performance with different club combinations. While the P·770 may offer a more compact look and lower flight for certain players, the P·790 provides more forgiveness, distance, and a higher ball flight. Golfers can also opt to create a blended set of P·770 and P·790 irons to maximize the benefits of both clubs, combining forgiveness and control for optimal performance on the course.
