New Zealand has become a sought-after destination for remote golf in recent years, attracting golf enthusiasts from around the world. The Hills, located on the South Island, is one of the country’s premier golf courses known for its stunning scenery and challenging layout. Owned by Sir Michael Hill, this course has hosted multiple New Zealand Open tournaments and is set for a multimillion-dollar redevelopment led by business partners Jim Rohrstaff and Ric Kayne.

Rohrstaff and Kayne, who have previously developed Te Arai Links and Tara Iti, have enlisted Australian golf course design firm Ogilvy, Cocking & Mead (OCM) to handle the renovations at The Hills. The main focus of the redevelopment is to make the course more walker-friendly, with plans to reroute the main 18 holes to enhance the overall playing experience. Additionally, the project includes upgrades such as a golf training facility, a fitness center, on-site accommodations, luxury real estate, a remodeled clubhouse, and a new pro shop.

The Hills is situated near the picturesque town of Queenstown, a popular destination for adventure sports, making it an ideal setting for golf enthusiasts looking for a remote and scenic golf experience. The renovations at The Hills are expected to transform the course into an upscale, private club with limited memberships, similar to the exclusive Tara Iti model. The project is scheduled to take place over two winters, starting in April 2026 and set to be completed by 2028, allowing for ample advance notice for members and visitors.

As golf, food, and travel writer Josh Sens explains, The Hills redevelopment project is a significant undertaking that aims to elevate the course to international prominence and provide a world-class golfing experience for its members. With its strategic location and stunning natural surroundings, The Hills is poised to become a top destination for golf enthusiasts seeking a luxurious and challenging golf experience in New Zealand. The partnership between Rohrstaff, Kayne, and OCM reflects a commitment to excellence and innovation in golf course design and development.

The comprehensive refresh of The Hills is expected to enhance the overall appeal of the course and attract discerning golfers from around the world. With its combination of scenic beauty, challenging layout, and top-notch amenities, The Hills is set to become a must-visit destination for golf enthusiasts looking for a unique and remote golf experience in New Zealand. The planned renovations are designed to elevate the course to new heights and solidify its reputation as one of the premier golf destinations in the country, further cementing New Zealand’s status as a top destination for high-end golf development.

In conclusion, The Hills redevelopment project represents a significant investment in the future of golf in New Zealand, with the potential to attract golf enthusiasts from around the world to experience its world-class facilities and stunning natural surroundings. With the expertise of Rohrstaff, Kayne, and OCM driving the project, The Hills is poised to become a leading destination for remote golf and luxury leisure experiences in the region. As the renovations take place over the next few years, golf enthusiasts can look forward to a revitalized and enhanced golfing experience at The Hills, setting the stage for a new era of excellence in high-end golf development in New Zealand.
