First look at Cleveland prototype wedges seen at Shiners Children’s Open

Equipment companies view PGA Tour events in Las Vegas as prime opportunities to showcase new gear due to the proximity to many brands’ headquarters in Southern California and the favorable weather conditions during the Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin. Cleveland Golf has introduced new wedges at this year’s event, known as “CG Proto,” which appear to be labeled as RTX Tour Rack. The RTX 6 ZipCore wedges, released in January 2023, have gained popularity among the brand’s staff players, leading to speculation about Cleveland’s next generation of wedges.

Traditionally, Tour Rack wedges from Cleveland are constructed with raw steel rather than a chrome finish, a preference among many tour players for reduced glare and more even rusting when exposed to air and water. Special grind work on a raw steel wedge results in uniform rusting across the wedge head, while chrome wedges may develop rust on raw areas alongside shiny chrome portions. Close-up images of the wedges’ toe reveal markings indicating “Full” and “Mid,” likely representing variations in sole bounce.

Although Cleveland has not officially disclosed details about the new CG Proto or RTZ wedges, previous product launches have occurred in late January or February following the PGA Merchandise Show in mid-January. As more information becomes available, Golfweek will continue to provide updates to golf enthusiasts. The publication maintains editorial independence and may earn affiliate fees from recommended products or services, without impacting their comprehensive coverage of the sport.
